Where: Meet at Carrs Wasilla at 6:30pm for carpooling and meetup - then head to trail. Leaving trailhead at 7:00pm (if you intend to meet at the trailhead please indicate in your rsvp in the notes section or send me a not letting me know so I don't expect you at Carrs.) *ORGANIZER:
Monica *DISTANCE: 1.5 Miles each way - says it can typically be done in 2 hours give or take. But since it is all uphill I may stop a few times to catch my breath and there are supposed to be amazing views at the top, since I'm a picture freak I may take a little extra time for photos also! *DIFFICULT: This is classed by MSB Parks as Moderate to Difficult. It is pretty much all an uphill hike. *ABOUT THE TRAIL: The West Butte trail is a hiking trail along the west side of Bodenburg Butte. The first mile is a moderate climb following a wide gravel path which meanders its way through old growth forest and alder thickets. At the top of a small hill the hiker can rest on a bench enjoying the view of the Matanuska River valley and Talkeetna Mountains to the northwest. It is here that the trail becomes more challenging and starts to climb the west side of Bodenburge Butte. From this point to above tree line the trail surgace alternates between stairs and a narrow path before cresting the cliff-like west slope. At the west crest of the butte the trail becomes less steep and traverses the grassy slopes towards the summit of the butte to the east. Even with stairs and a hardened path the last 1/2 mile of the trail can be challenging. Be cautious and watch your step. The hike to the summit of the butte and back to the trailhead can be completed in 2 hours. The trail offers wonderful views of the Matanuska River valley, Talkeetna Mountains to the northwest, and once on top of the butte, grand views of the Knik River valley, Knik Glacier and Pioneer Peak. ~Take Note: Moose frequent this area. Make your presence known. Keep dogs on leash and under your control. ***(for those that want to hike but prefer it a little less challenging hike the bench may be the perfect place to stop and enjoy the views.) *This trail is maintained by the Mat Su Borough Parks and Outdoor Recreation Division so state park stickers will NOT work here. There is $3 parking fee or MSB Pass sticker does work here. (which can purchased at the fee station in the envelope for a $30 annual pass.) HOW TO GET THERE: Access to the West Butte Trail is from Mothershead Circle - From Palmer, Take the Glenn Hwy, go straight through the light at Carrs, take a Right onto E Arctic Ave. go southeast on the Old Glenn Hwy, 5.5 miles from Palmer take a right on Bodenburg Loop, proceed 1/2 mile and take a left on Morthershead Circle, proceed about 400 feet to the trailhead parking area on the right. The trail actually begins about 300 feet further along Morthershead Circle. Hikers should walk along the road shoulder to the trail, which is gated to prevent vechile traffice, and which is located between two homes. LINKE TO MSB TRAIL PDF & MAP:

If you have any questions you can e-mail me or my cell is[masked] (during the week I cannot answer during business hours 8:30-5 but leave me a message and I'll call on a break or lunch. *I have not hiked this trail but really would like to and have heard from many others it is a nice trail but expect it to be all an uphill climb! Should be worth it though!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
