Heart 'n Lungers - South Fork - Arctic Valley Ridge traverse

Moved the time to 15 minutes later to accomodate those who said 6 was too early ---- be there AT 6:15 so we can depart 10 minutes later. Meet at the Entrance to the Anchorage Dump. It is the Eagle River Loop Rd. - Hiland Road turn-off the Glenn Highway. Go off the Glenn, turn left to go over the overpass. Park outside the dump entrance. There is a little parking lot there to the left of the dump entrance. We will figure out a car arrangement then .... weather pemitting, some will drive up the South Fork of Eagle River and others will drive to Arctic Valley. We will then walk in opposite directions along the ridge top behind Arctic Valley Ski Area. Both groups will walk the ridge - for more elevation gain start on the South Fork end. For a little less elevation gain or if you only want to do a more simple up-and-back down walk (the 'wheezers' may want to do this - you know who you are, having named your sub-group), plan to go to the Arctic Valley end. It'll be more simple than I am making it sound. Plan on about 3 hours as usual. We want to be finished no later than about 10 PM for the possibility of the Arctic Valley gate being closed as the signs up there say it may be. I hike with ski poles on steep ones like this (trust me!!!). Dress in layers and bring wind shell, warm hat and light gloves. You never know what conditions might be like 1000' - 1500' above. Bring plenty of water and a light snack. Dogs are OK; I'll have Chili and Caesar. Like most of these Tuesday nighters, this one is OK for those who want to start up but not go all the way. The Knik Arm and South Fork ER views will be so fine that I recommend this hike to all, even those who do not want all the elevation gain or full ridge traverse. Come part way up: savor the mountains and good company. Even from the Arctic Valley walk-up views will be spectacular, so think "high" for the views. It has become an Adventurers MeetUp tradition to join up again after the hike at Pizza Man when we hike in Eagle River. Even if you miss the hike you can join us there about 10:30 or a bit after.

Fabulous outing! Everyone grouped up neatly for the car shuttling - fun to meet folks halfway on the ridge. Incredibly beautiful vistas and great company! Wish I could've met up for pizza, but had to head home before 10.

I really enjoyed the opportunity to share my passion for outdoor activity with a group of like minded individuals and the comradely shared at the after hike meet up.

We both loved it! Bean and Rufus teamed up to save the world from groundhogs. They managed not to get anything but had a fun time running all around.

Split into 2 groups, set up the car plan away we went. Great weather, great group, views, everything. Well, except my crazy husky dog going all the way to the bottom on the slope on the WRONG side of the mountain when we were ready to drop down to the cars and finish the hike. Oh well, she finally came back and we all went happily (except her and Caesar) to Pizza Man. Thanks to all for making the car thing work out so effortlessly and efficiently. See you next week for either of two Heart n Lungers on Tuesday the 24th - Bird Ridge or Black Tail Rocks.

Good plan with having others drive your car to the linkup point. Flexibility in the route allowed us to summit Rendezvous, Gordon Lyon, and Site Summit. Great hike, and great weather!

What a spectacular view it was once we huffed it up the ridge. Wow. All those mountains! Would have made a great picnic spot earlier in the day. The weather was perfect. It was great fun to coordinate the vehicles in the 2 different locations and meet up w/ the two groups on the ridge. The patches of snow were still hard enough to walk on. One question, Doug. We were wondering. Where exactly on the trail was there supposed to be that 'flat easy trail area'??????? We never did find that part of the hike. Know anybody that can give a good foot rub (besides me)???

Whoooaa ---- before lots of you start saying "I am going to do it my way . .. ." We are meeting at the DUMP ENTRANCE. People there will be accomodated in car placement. If you do not participate in that . . . do not expect to be transported from other end. If there are adequate vehicles, great. If we end up short of car seats because you decided to "do it your way" and did not participate as a part of group planning, you may be out a ride. FYI last year ALL WHEEZERS did this whole hike!!

For those who cannot join us until 6:30 ----- you will meet one another at the Arctic Valley golf driving range parking lot. Take the Arctic Valley exit from the Glenn Hiway (about a mile or 2 beyond Muldoon Road.), drive about 3/4 mile. Wait for others in paved parking lot on the right; pull all the way to the far end of the lot in case there are many golfers there. RSVP if you will be coming at 6:30. You will be part of the group that starts from this end. We'll get you back to your cars OK.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
