Falls Creek to South Suicide

This is a super steep hike of 9 miles with 5000 feet elevation gain but the views should be our reward. For slightly less eager hikers the tarn at 2900 feet is lovely in the autumn and a great place for a lunch.

Bring the usual-non-cotton layers, good raingear, small pack, water (there is plenty available on trail, just need to treat), bear spray and trekking poles if desired. gloves, hat and headlamp are good to have in your pack this time of year.

Questions? My # is 3068973. Carpooling from Carr's Huffman...be sure to carpool with someone who shares your goals and ablilities.

I'll still go in light rain but more wind (please stop!) or downpour will cause me to cancel.

If you just plan on hiking to tarn please state in your RSVP so we have an idea of whether there are 2 groups or not.- Maureen

Regaled by fall colors, prodded upward by warm winds, and lightly sprinkled from heavenly storehouses. Another terrific day to be alive in Alaska! Thanks Maureen and thanks to an awesome group.

Wind was not cold so it was an exciting hike but too windy to go past the ridge above the tarn. Great company, very interesting, positive and fun group. Nice post hike beer at Brown Bear Saloon.

Great fall colors, ditto for the company and I thought the wind exciting.

Nice exercise hike, not much rain just a tad windy. Great Fall colors, lots of sheep, no snow. Thanks Maureen !
FYI looks like the tarn is about 3000' and the ridgeline most turned around at is about 3700'

This is Todd. I am at mp 110 on the turnagain and the winds are extremely high. I dont think it is safe to hike in the woods w all the recent windstorms and the poss of falling trees and branches. Gonna bail

I'll probably turn around at the tarn, if we can get there through downed trees :-) It's 62F on the South end of town !

Don't feel like fighting the wind, will try it on a nicer day!

Still on though it's pretty windy at elevation already. Really don't want to waste a weekend staying home. We'll probably need to reassess our goals in relation to safety as we approach the ridgeline.

Won't cancel for light rain but heavy rain and wind is not fun for me. If I do cancel, I'll do it by 8AM on Sat so check here if weather looks sketchy.

I plan on hiking to the peak, and have a ride that can handle three passengers...although two are jump seats in the back that are comfy...just a tad on the scrunchy side if you're not vertically challenged...

9AM at Carrs. If you're meeting at trailhead will be 9:40ish

  • Larry

so we are meeting in Carrs parking lot at 9am?

PS, you really want to bring trekking poles unless you are tremendously agile....trail is really steep and with all the rain we've gotten it should be a mud chute on the way down.
