Slackers Weekday field trip to Hatcher's Pass

Let's sleep in and then head to Hatcher Pass for some fun and exercise! Mother nature can decide which scenario we'll have:

A)It doesn't snow much before then so it will be safe to hike. I'd like to hike Government Peak from the trail behind the B&B. It has a mostly south exposure.

B)It snows alot so trails are groomed and we can XC ski around mine. There are trails for all levels and they're usually nicely groomed once it snows enough.

I'll update this as the day approaches and it becomes apparent which option is more appropriate. Dogs welcome either way.

According to NOAA website there is 6" of snow average in Hatcher Pass and crosscountryalaska reports that trails around mine are groomed so I think I'll ski. If everyone is not on board and we have someone willing to coordinate a hike we could do 2 groups, just chime in. In any case, I plan to meet for carpool at Carr's at 9:30, leave there by 9:40 and arrive at Hatcher's (lot below mine) around 11 to 11:15. Parking is $5. Bring lots of warm layers, water, lunch or snack. Well-behaved dogs welcome, especially large dogs willing to pull me up the hill :) Questions? Maureen[masked]three

I just bought some XC skis and have never done it before. Will this be an issue? Should I get a little more comfortable before coming out to something like this?

There's alot of beginner type trail so you should be fine, one big hill that you could walk down. This is a good place to start (barring that one hill)

Hey Maureen! Change of plans. My aunt and uncle are taking me to Fairbanks. We're actually on the road now and we're staying the night. Thanks for everything though. If you have another activity planned this week, let me know! I'd love to meet people!

Hey everyone! My name is Toni and I'll be visiting Alaska for a week from Atlanta. My aunt and uncle live here so I'm here for the Thanksgiving break. They'll be working so I'll have to find something to occupy myself. Someone recommended this site to find people to explore Alaska with, so here I am! I've never been to Alaska so any suggestions of what I should bring/expect would be great! I'm planning on joining you on Monday! :)

You will love Hatcher's Pass. I still am not sure if we'll ski or hike since I'm away, not sure what the weather will be like. One thing for sure, it will not be like Atlanta! I will e-mail you Toni on Saturday. You'll need lots of wool or synthetic layers, small pack, good boots, warm hat and mittens and ice grippers and trekking poles if we hike. If we ski I have a pair of size 8 skis you can borrow or you can rent from REI. If we hike it will be steep but you look young and I am not so I'm sure you'll do OK. If we ski there will be options of groomed trails and you can stick to the easy ones if you're a beginner.
