Skate the Slough at Jim Lake

The ice  skating is still excellent.  Slough at Jim Lake is frozen solid.  I will  update the conditions as needed.  I would expect to be out from 4-6 hours.  There are many other places in the Valley to skate also.  The ice is nearly like glass so now is the time to skate since snow is forecast for next week.   Strike while the ice is cold.  Bring: Warm layered clothes,  extra clothes in case you get wet but the ice is thick,  water, food, some people bring poles for balance, hockey sticks and pucks, cameras, etc.  Dogs are welcome.

Optional:  Anchorage People Meet at Carr's Muldoon at 9 a.m. We will leave there and head up to Carr's Palmer to meet the rest of the group.

Thanks for the heads up on Eklutna. That seems more do-able for me today, though I won't be there soon enough to meet up with you. Still in my bathrobe :)

Found my dog, after I skated back to the end of the lake and back to the car along the shoreline. Some 20-somethings had taken her, thinking she was a stray on the lam from the STate Park ranger. Had to go to Wasilla to pick her up after getting back to the car right at dark. Good call on the skating. It was perfect!

Good skating. A little more frost on the ice than last week but stiil okay. We skated to Swqn Lake and then to the Knik River and back. It was very windy in Palmer but no wind at all on Jim Creek area. I met some nice new people.

quite often that sort of silt doesnt stick to the ice. I was out today in an analogous area and mostly silt was not an issue. Also dont be dissuaded if its windy on the way there. The air is dead still in this area when its blustery just a few miles away. If it is too silty at JC you might try finger/cottonwood lake or wolf lake and etc (havent been to these recently so its just a guess. I may show up and skate with you guys, but if im not there dont wait for me.

Re-read the event description and looks like a carpool is being organized from Carrs, not Fred's, on Muldoon. BTW, I might drive out on my own and go visit some friends in the valley afterward, so don't wait up for me.

Valerie you go toward the mountains on the Old Glenn Hwy. turniong at Maud Rd. Go to the very end way past state maintaince ends signs. http://www.mapquest.c...

The mapquest link just points to Palmer. The google link is for Carr's, not the Lake. Typing in "Maud Road" finally got me there. Looks like I would have to really know where I was going to meet you there, like it's a hike to the slough access from the road.
