  •      Mark forgot his titanium mug out near Long Lake this summer and since it's never going to snow let's see if we can find it! While we're at it we can enjoy a moderate but lengthy estimated 12 mile round trip hike to a beautiful lake situated behind Near Point and surrounded by some beautiful mountains. Elevation gain should be modest, I'd guess less than 2000 feet. I can't find a write-up on this so if someone is sure that I'm way off please speak up!

Bring the usual-non-cotton layers, small pack, water, snack, trekking poles if desired, ice grippers highly recommended. Pack for possible wind and bring a headlamp just in case. I'm bringing my skates but it's a longshot we could skate this.

Looks like Shanes's weather forecast is spot on. Do we really want to be out in minus 15 all day??????????

Hi, I'm a tourist who will be around Anchorage for a couple of days, but I have no transport. I would love to attend if any of the participants could offer to take me there from downtown Anchorage or from anywhere I could go myself with PeopleMover.

How long do you think this hike will take? I'm interested in going but not sure I have time for the whole trek.

Would be an all day thing if we can brave the cold and get back to lake, say about 6-8 hours. Greg however is only going part the way so you could hike back when he turns.

I plan to be out about 4 hours. Will probably turn back at the creek that comes down from the cirque between Knoya and Tikishla peaks. This spot is about where the route from the east side of Near Point connects with the Long Lake route.

Will probably be a wuss, forecast looks like it might be 10F to 15F below all day up that valley, not sure I'm that gung ho. Would like to know where the trail is that Amy worked on though. Only one I've had pointed out is the one that takes off just after crossing the creek on the way to the Dome ( from the upper Basher trailhead, touching on the military area etc. )

From the junction with the Dome trail, it looks like the route goes thru about a mile of trees and brush before breaking out into more open terrain. I just posted a photo here...

On Wed night I hiked up to the Dome in the moonlight, and decided to get up there again soon in the daylight. I went back this afternoon (Monday) and found the Long Lake route depicted on the Imus map. It veers off to the right about 1.5 miles up the Dome trail, in the steep area before you break out of the trees onto the bald ridge below the Dome. Marked by blue flag tape on the right. Looks like a few people and some dogs have used it recently. I hiked in about 1/4 mile, and it appears to be continuously flagged with blue tape. It's quite passable, but defintely slower than the hard-packed Dome trail.

I can't join you, but some friends and I recently did some trail clearing on the lower game trail. You can probably find the trail we packed down.

Great since I've never hiked this trail before.
