Fellow Meet Up folks. Be very careful driving to events as it is already getting icy in some places. Today on our way to a hike driving up Hiland road was very, very icy. The road was covered in frost creating very bad black ice. One of our new meet up folks actually rolled her car after losing control. Fortunately she was going slow and didn't get hurt. But, a word of caution that the drive to our events is probably the most hazardous part of any meet up. Wear your seat belts, drive conservatively, use 4 WD and or studded tires. If your car is not equipped properly ask to car pool with experienced members and remember to share the cost of the gas, even for closer trips. Be safe. Ted Assistant Organizer.

Thanks for the heads-up Ted. Carpooling is a great suggestion. Glad to hear the driver wasn't hurt. Any outdoor professional will tell you that driving to/from the trip is statistically the most dangerous part. I hope everyone will treat it with the respect it deserves.

You are to be congratulated. I am so afraid of driving on ice. This is an excellent reminder when most of us haven't faced ice or snow yet. Thanks, Holly F

Our meet up is full of super nice and helpful people, just ask to ride along with experienced Alaskan meet up members. Remember to share the gas generously especially for trips to Hatcher's Pass and Girdwood or longer. Guaranteed these roads will be hazardous, but well worth the drive for fun show shoe, ice skating, and other adventures. Also as courtesy don't tell the driver that you have to be back by say 4 p.m., if you have a deadline find someone else that will share the deadline and ride with them. This has worked very well, but these are just reminders as we are now in a more hazardous driving season.
