Matanuska valley ice report
Chickaloon Marsh Proper fine ice has developed on the marsh at mp 71.2 glenn hwy. Spectacular clear smooth, exquisite, and fast. http://www.youtube.co...
Eska creek is not quite ready but it will be golden if we get a cold night or 2.
Matanuska River skating on side channel of the mat at mp 69 and some river skating nearly ready just below chickaloon confluence.
Dust off those blades folks. Time and tides wait for no man, and neither does good ice, whats great today may be gone tomorrow!Skate season is here! Git yer skate on yo!

Rabbit Slough. Covered in two inches of perfect glassy ice but sadly has too much grit on itnto be enjoyable. Most of the hayflats area is similar condition.

Gleenn hwy ice report
Long lake has just been overflowed by the small stream that feeds it and is super glassy and smooth but very thin like half an inch and not thick enough to hold a human. If it stays cold for a few days with no snow this will be completely golden

Mendeltna creek. Small stream past eureka has skatable areas and some open water

Matanuska side channel near mp 69 has gorgeous new flow and freeze. Smooth glassy and golden

Hayflats areas including lakes seem to still all have alot of grit on them too much to really be any fun.

KNiK bridge/bodenburg creek. Tiny bit of clear overflow ice. Also a secondhand report of some clear ice on the way to jim creek. That report was from nonskaters so make of it what you will. Most other mat su ice covered in snow. There is However lotS of wind and snow transport happening tonight so there is a probability of great skating this weekend and coming week

Mat su ice report

Skating Season has really kicked off in the last few days with cold and windy weather...Here is what ive found:

Knik FCS Area Couple miles of fabulous A- ice stay away from center channel. Also some obvious pond skating. Very poor parking.

Bodenburg confluence/bridge pond clear and clean some snow

Jim Creek knik confluence: Beautiful ice a- quality in a spectacular setting 4x4 required to get there. Unattended cars tend to get burned in thhis area.

Magical Hayflat Mystery ponds Blown off but a little rough not bad. C+ quality

Rabbit slough Smooth and fast with a little snow on top B+ quality.

Knik estuary: Tidal ice starting to develop along shores very smooth and beautiful. A good place to be careful.

Mat su lakes mostly blown off

Matanuska River Some side channels frozen and blown off in the last few days. Main channel still open water and dangerous, but starting to fill up with ice. See details in last few posts.

Its been very cold and windy the last few days so if yo come out for this be sure to dress very warm.
I should have a youtube video put together in the next day or so of some of this.

Upcoming tidal skating opportunities

In the next three days w/r/f there will be six high tides above 30 feet which should paste some real fine ice on the flats around ship creek boat launch etc and other estuaries around anchorage. If you see some nice ice please post a note even if youre not a skater. This sort of skating requires some caution and should be done with a few friends.
