Froggy's Topanga Fish Market (map)
Starting a fire by rubbing sticks together is a magical skill! I'm always amazed to watch someone get their first primitive fire: something wakes up inside them and that person is changed, like they've re-connected with their ancestors from thousands of years ago.
We will start our fires with both handdrill and bow drill. I'll bring all the materials, so you just need to show up with your enthusiasm to learn something new (old), and a smile.
I'll also cover some of the ancient uses of fire for bending wood (like an arrow shaft or a bow limb), shaping wood (to make a spoon or bowl or canoe), for signalling, heating, cooking and habitat management.
I started my first primitive fire with a bowdrill 31 years ago and I've made thousands since then, and it's still a magical experience every time.
I'm looking for a place where we can legally have a fire, so if you have a suggestion please let me know.
Suggested donation for this class is $35.
Chris Morasky has been teaching ancient skills for over 25 years, and he is recognized as one of the foremost instructors in North America. Chris lived in a tipi for 6 years, was attacked by moose and bear, and has spent time learning from Lakota, Blackfeet, Shoshone, Arapahoe, and Serri tribes. Chris has also led totally Stone Age trips into the wilderness wearing buckskin clothing, carrying a handmade bow and stone pointed arrows, and with a willow packbasket on his back.

Sorry I can't make it. I have an ongoing client every Sat. morning till 10:30am in the SFV.
Location-What about Zuma Canyon, on Bosail and PCH?
I've never been to Zuma Canyon, though on the map I see that it's getting to be a long drive for some folks. I'd like to find something closer to Santa Monica or south of there. Any other thoughts?
Not gonna make a canoe this month, lol, though I'd like to do one. I started one for a program in Ohio, but we wanted to keep it looking "in progress". I'd like to use it to straighten our handdrill spindles and a couple other things, though we can only do what we can do. Maybe just make fire and have fun this time, and do a 3+ day event someplace further out. I want to do a primitive fishing class that would be 3 days...
Susan, thank you for your suggestion. Seems to very few places to have a campfire and Dockweiler and Huntington beaches offer that, but no other resources, unfortunately.
Is this a kid (9 YO) friendly event? We both love nature..
Hi Kathy, absolutely! In the old days, children were a part of almost everything that was valuable in the lives of the adults. I carry that philosophy. At age 9, I'm sure that he or she will jump right in and have a blast!
Thanks Chris! :) In that case count us in! I am looking forward to meeting you and joining in .. :)
Chris, how much time should we allot for this fire adventure? Thanks.
Hello-
I still have no idea where this event is taking place, lol. Could someone please let me know as I live in South Pasadena and need to consult my magic navigational device in order to find my way. :)) Also, I am hoping it is not too far away from me.....
Hey everyone! I just got back from a week of teaching in the AZ desert, so please forgive me for being out of the techno loop. I will post our location tomorrow so that you can all plan for your journey and arrange carpooling. Rachel, our adventure will last until 3-4 pm.
Everyone will make their own Stone Age fire kit to take with them.
Sounds like we should bring a lunch. Will you also show us how to perfectly roast a veggie dog over the fires we start? ;-)
Rachel, LOL! I've never yet met a vegetarian dog, but if I find one, I'm pretty sure that I can cook it :)
Ok, so is there anybody coming from the Dodger Stadium area who would like to share a ride?
Sorry, Chris! Turns out I'm booked that day. :( Next time!
