True, I'd like to see that as well. First, definitely Spring for Android, second - dependency resolution with either Maven or Gradle. I'm wondering how these look in action.

Awesome to be there last night! What I would like to see is how Android applications get built with Maven (or what Android devs use?) and frameworks that have adapted to Android like Spring etc.

Thanks Brett for your time and a great code-lab.

oops . missed it .. so much email - reminder got lost amongst all that other stuff with "cloud" in the subject! - not a good word to use in reminder emails! - brain filters out anything with over-used marketing words when in a hurry !

Will there be another "getting stated" session?

I want to get stated with Android but not being so familiar with the IDE world a session like this would probably help
(I'm more used to working with a shell prompt and currently the lack of root/sudo shell on these devices makes it hard to get started!)

great to see that this looked like a successful session.
Any chance that someone took a video of it?

Geek City - loved it. The android app exercise was certainly challenging, will require some off-line study to get my head around it. Great support from Google.

Good structure but the training material was not up to date and presenter Brett Morgan probably needed more time to rest and prepare :)

Was great. Need more beginner style like this. Good to have both native and Internet development apps this was a bit much for the timeframe. Some of the people struggled using eclipse and learning the framework at the same time. Maybe a first time simpler class is needed

Hello I am interest in attending this session. What kind of app will we be creating? I've been looking for help to learn to develop android apps but they all seem to venture out into complicated things:( I am experienced in Java so I know the lingo, just need a little boost on app development.

    September 21, 2012

  • John S.

We have a venue now and I just need to confirm dates (late Sep or early Oct).

Who is interested in speaking ? Preferably someone with Android development experience. If noone comes forward I will arrange a speaker.

Also, I will be pitching the event at newbies. ie. those interested in learning how to develop native Android apps in Java. If this is NOT what you are interested in then please let me know. An alternative would be that we do an intro into Android web app development using html5 and app wrappers like Phonegap.

    September 17, 2012

    • John S.

Hi Bill, this event will be about NATIVE app development for Android (not Web App development). Thanks for the offer of help on the night.

      September 19, 2012

    • BILL

      Okay. :)

      September 19, 2012

  • Kit K.

    September 18, 2012

    • John S.

Kit we are just across the bridge. Train it to Circular Quay and walk from there. You will make it by 6 easy peasy.

      September 18, 2012

  • John S.

Date is confirmed for NEXT WEDNESDAY 26 Sep 2012. See event for venue and start time. Please prepare your laptop with the Android development tools described. If you need help then please comment here and folks can chime in.

  • mikemd

yes would like this ... what sort of venue are you looking for? ... could ask around.

my personal preferences would be the Surry Hills/Chippendale/Darlinghurst side of town - much easier to get to!

    September 17, 2012

    • John S.

Mike we have a venue in The Rocks so hope thats close enough for you.

    Hi all
Since my 1st suggest (original post enquiry to start this 'ANDROID LEARNING TO PROGRAM') ive been waiting for feedback. Ive received only a couple and yet i received a post from the Organisers of Android Australia User Group Sydney - John Scott mentioning hell get back to us with an date/place.
Has anyone received any news about this ?

    September 13, 2012

    • jim

Yeh Scott, standby, like to know whats holding it back ? whats the delay ? I originally posted this meetup and have been left in the dark bout it. Like to know whats going on ?

      September 13, 2012

    • John S.

I should have some more information today. Please know that this is a community group and I organise as a volunteer.

      September 14, 2012

  • Peter R.

The Rocks sounds like a great location, close to Circular Quay :-) Question: Do these learning sessions need people to bring laptops etc. I guess some people will need to install Eclipse etc and those Android resources take ages to download. Can these resources been distributed on a USB on the night rather then rely on WiFi.

    • Ravian B.

My college has confirmed that it is fine to hold this event at our Rocks Campus if you guys are interested.

      September 13, 2012

    • John S.

Ravian can we discuss this ? Please email me your number to johnoscott AT Gmail.com

      September 13, 2012

  • Ravian B.

    Hi guys,
Sorry if this posted 2, looked like something went wrong the first time:

I am a lecturer at a college in the Rocks and we have classes until 9pm, I can see if we can use one of the lecture rooms for this event if you are interested?

If possible, could other lecturers/students join in if they want?

    Cheers,
    Ravian

Is someone volunteering to present ? Please let me know.

I work in the City and catch a train home, so proximity to transport is important, that is, not too far off the beaten track.

So far 2 x city area (surry hills + 2xCity), still waiting for further input from the rest of the signees b4 goto next step

      August 30, 2012

    • Julian H.

I work near Olympic park... would prefer something like glebe/newtown to surry hills.

      August 30, 2012

  • Amanda W.

I'm not sure what kind of location you're looking for. However, there's a cafe in Surry Hills on Crown Street called Ampersand Cafe and Bookstore (http://www.menufeast.com.au/info/33320/ampersand-cafe-and-bookstore-crown-st/surry-hills/) which has comfy couches, tables and serves food. Good place for ideas and discussions with nibbles. They are open until about 10pm which is good for after work meet ups.

    • jim

Hi Amanda. Thx for feedback. Not a bad idea for initial meet where we can get aquainted and come up with some ideas to gather for a new meetup. Though my goal is to make this group a more hands on approach eg, talk and type ;) still looking to hear from other signees on their views. but keep in mind. send me ur email so have u on my list. Jim

  • Adam P.

    Who's organising this one?
Do we need a location ?

    August 28, 2012

    • Adam P.

Jim, send me an email and we can go through some options for a venue. ([masked])

      August 28, 2012

    • jim

Wait first for some feedback from others, regarding venue, if have anything to discuss bring it into this page and will refine from there.

      August 29, 2012

  • jim

    Hello Andrew
    Sounds good.
C what the others like, sent 2 all msgs with welcome and suggest to attend. ur the 1st one. Jim

    August 28, 2012

  • Julian H.

Hey, so is this a just getting started meetup? - ie, following the steps for configuring android SDK, elcipse, to make the hello world program? or is it more for people already using it to talk about general app approaches and common issues?

    August 26, 2012

    • jim

all of the above, depends how large the meetup gets then thered be a good variety of needs or expectations, thats when you get specific as youve mentioned Adam. at first my suggest would be initial acquantance getting to know the people in this interest be it beginners or intermediate or advanced shouldnt really matter. when get together then came become more organised.

      August 27, 2012

    • jim

now its up to the rest of the signees when / where this should be done ?
