This Meetup is open to developers at all levels of development and all disciplines. Anyone who wants to unlock the potential of a G1, MyTouch, ADP1 or ADP2
Ladies and Gents,
We have a new meeting space (ParisSoma), a really cool new website (AndroidMakers.com) we have a really cool group project (APEX, underway and almost ready for limited alpha release) our momentum is great. Oh, and Android as a whole is booming.
We have lots to enjoy but we are leaving people behind. Too many people, both developers and users are stuck on Android 1.5 or 1.6. Some users are even trapped on *gasp* Android 1.
So I'm taking a moment to go back to day one of The Android Makers where I demonstrated how to unlock and upgrade the G1 and outlined the opportunity that is there for makers to enjoy a massive leap forward in their potential to create new and interesting devices.
Materials Covered:
Open Handset Architecture
This is an intro to what Firmware is, why the "Radio" is really important, what an SPL does and what is in an Android ROM. This is designed to give you a basic understanding of the "moving parts" of an open handset.
Android Open Source, The Google Experience and The HTC Sense UI
This is a brief explanation on what is legal and what is not. The basic gist is that you can not distribute roms containing paid applications or proprietary code and you definitely can not sell a device which is running a rom that cotains these.
Upgrade Demo
I upgrade a G1 from the locked, stock version of Android 1.5 to Android 2.1 with live wallpapers, voice control, speech to text, and more I don't dare to write on the internets
Nandroid Backup/Restore Demo
Here you will learn how to back up and restore the whole device.
Break
Unbricking Demo
This is where I purposefully break all the rules, in the first section, mess up an upgrade and brick a G1 rendering it completely useless. (then I magically bring it back to life)
Demo Lab
For members who bring their G1, MyTouch, ADP1 or ADP2. This is where you upgrade your phones and myself and some of our members will help you if you run into problems.
The Android Makers
This is a brief intro to the group, history and why we do what we do.
I'll be working out the flow of the night for the next couple weeks and inviting related companies to participate.
This is at our new Meetup Location: PariSoma
Updates TBA
See you in March!

I have a new challenge - how about connecting a bluetooth keyboard to an upgraded Mytouch 2.1 firmware i.e.

Will this include directions on how to rollback in case we later find an incompatible issue? Also will future versions of OTA updates be downloaded as well?
Kimo, Yes, I'll cover the process of backing up and rolling back your ROM. RE: Bluetooth, that's trickier because of the history of Bluetooth and Android, I'm not headed down that road myself (yet) but I can provide some resources to help you plow it. If you're interested, get in touch w/me sid@sidgabriel.com and let me know where you're at, I'd be happy to help. See you on the 17th!
zeiss.. i might miss this..!! having my lab project demo the same day..! do we have webinars available ???
or is there a chance that you postpone the event?
Vinay - I'm curious about your demo. I'll be doing the demo on an Android Developer Phone (ADP1). I'll provide links to instructions and I'm happy to help any member that tries to do this at home and gets stuck. I had my first meetup at PariSoma last week and I think I'll have to reduce the length of presentation and up the amount of hands on attention. I'll send information out before Tuesday on how to prepare your phone if you intend to upgrade your ROM Wednesday night. See you all there.
I need a phone that will record my side of the conversation.
Much preferable to automatically do this as soon as I initiate a call. Is this feasible on a droid?
Appropriate/fruitful to discuss this at the meetup?
Why do I want this? There are many interesting health related apps one can do if one can record ones phone calls. (New research demostrates that speech is important in health informatics.) To make it legal in CA you can't record the person on the other end of the line.
Thanks for hosting this!
