EXTREMELY URGENT!!!! I've just heard an most dreadful and unbelievable news from Japan. Today, (11th Oct.) The city council of Midori-cho, Kameyama, Mie Prefecture, JAPAN will be operating simultaneous trap and distraction of all feral cats. THERE'S NO TIME. Please stop them! Bombard them with phone calls, FAX and e-mail. Please help to prevent this horrible practice .... Also, please SHARE AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE. International pressure still frightens petty local officials! Great many thanks who share the compassion.

【Details】

On the 22 September, the resident's association of Midori-cho in Kameyama, Mie prefecture sent a circular to all its residents. It said "We will be trapping and destroy all feral cats. Cats will be taken to Suzuka pound. If you own a trap, please cooperate us to catch the ferrals." The document had the contact details of the president of the residents' association.

【Following are just few of the circular going around in Midori-cho in Kameyama, Mie prefecture. 】

"Owners who are not keeping their pets properly and bothering neighbours are violating Article 7 of the Animal Welfare and Management Law. In such cases, you have no ownership rights of the animals if you are violating the law."

"If pet animals cause any harm to their neighbours, their owners must be obligated to compensate according to Article 718 Civil Code."

"Culling is the only way to eliminate nuisance by pet cat and feral cat."

"Please don't worry, it's not against The Animal Abuse Law. Let's clean up vermin legally!"

"It's best to use traps and take them to the pounds. It's also effective to put the poisonous bait on the grounds around your home. Anyway, no mercy is necessary to exterminate cats".

I am totally sad and with a great delusion about Japan these days....I cant imagine such a message coming from the Administrators....what example they expect to teach to their kids? What kind of community would allow that? If something can be done, is basic education on animal care and welfare....why is so difficult to the community open their senses to that? sorry...lots of questions without answer today
I e-mail the Prime Minister, in addition to Mie Prefecture....hoping to make some difference http://nodasblog.kant...

Peta suggests via Apollonia to also contact the following:

His Excellency Naoto Kan
Prime Minister of Japan
https://www.kantei.go... or kan-naoto@nifty.com
+81-(0)3-3581-0101

+81-(0)3-3595-0090 (fax)

The Honorable Michihiko Kano
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries
m-kano@ma.catvy.ne.jp
+81-(0)3-3508-7205

+81-(0)3-3508-3205 (fax)

The Honorable Ryu Matsumoto
Minister of Environment and Minister of State for Disaster Management
post@open-ryu.net
+81-(0)3-3508-7616

+81-(0)3-3593-7266 (fax)

Not including the rest of Peta's comments since Peta actually supports the trapping and killing of feral cats (and seems to have missed that they are also trapping and killing people's outdoor pet cats, and that "euthanasia" is probably done by gassing). These contacts seem much further removed from the situation, but the bigger fuss raised the better, right?
