Man jailed after longtime abuse kills dog

DELTONA -- A dog owner's explanation that her dog ran out from under a bed and crashed into a door jamb did not sit well with a veterinarian who called authorities, a city spokesman said Thursday.

"The extent of the injuries didn't fall in line with what was said," said spokesman Lee Lopez.

After an investigation by authorities, Kyle Matthew Abbott, 24, was jailed Wednesday on a charge of felony animal cruelty. Abbott is the boyfriend of the dog's owner, Tara Jones, Lopez said.

Abbott left the Volusia County Branch Jail after posting $5,000 bail.

Abbott moved in with Jones at her Fort Smith home in October 2009 and officials believe that's when he started abusing the dog. The abuse ended in April when the dog died of severe head injuries, a charging affidavit states.

Jones took the animal to a clinic in Lake Mary. The 10-pound dachshund was bleeding from the eyes, had a broken pelvis and ribs, blood in the urine and a large amount of blood coming out of its mouth and nostrils, the report states.

Jones said Abbott tried to get the dog out from under a bed with a broom and the dog ran into a door jamb, ripped the door off its frame as it ran into it, hurting its neck. Jones also said the dog jumped out of Abbott's hand and slammed into a wall, the report shows.

The couple also said that in November 2009, the dachshund suffered a broken pelvis when a bigger dog stepped on it and in December the canine suffered head and foot injuries after it was scared by the vacuum cleaner, the report states.
