Introduction

My name is Aymee and I've been a vegetarian since 2002. I've had more energy, become healthier, and been happier. As an animal lover I try to do all I can to help. I have two rescued dogs and one rescued cat who I would do anything for.

What type of activism do you enjoy? (i.e. leafletting, tabling, hosting film screenings, letter writing, restaurant outreach, etc...)

I've mostly written politicians. My friends say I have a stone face and a hidden heart when I write which I think comes in handy. I've found politicians are concerned with money and doing things to get them re-elected. Therefore I manipulate the letters to provide ways which would benefit animals and produce revenue. For example increasing fines for animal abuse in order to fund better animal control facilities, programs, and employ more animal control officers to enforce abuse and neglect. Or creating rescue affiliate programs which would reduce the output cost for animal control facilities and reduce the number of euthanized animals. Charging fees for breeders and requiring licenses would help fund animal control programs and reduce the number of backyard breeders. Suggesting solutions helps gain a politicians attention more than trying to make them empathetic.

Why do you want to help animals?

Because animals help me. My dogs and cat have helped me through some rough times and they deserve to be spoiled. I want all domestic animals to have that fate and all wild animals to be able to preform their jobs. The anoles around my house help keep roaches at bay. The bats help with mosquitos, and the buzzards (I actually find them rather fascinating and adorable) help keep the roads clean. If animals are allowed to do their job there wouldn't be a need for human interference such as hunting to control over population.

When do you have availability so that other members can reach you to pair up to do activism?

Mostly weekends but my schedule does get screwed up once in awhile.

What Aymee Laurain is saying about this Meetup Group

I met some very interesting and friendly people. I felt very welcomed and at ease. It's nice to find a group of people as enthusiastic about animal rights as I am.

  • Hey Aymee, great to work with you. I love that adventurous spirit, especially climbing up the cross bars. I hope the photos I made turn out OK, I think I got a couple of good ones and I'll post them shortly. I have not forgotten!
