Jonathan Safran Foer's "Everything is Illuminated"

  • August 20, 2009 · 7:30 PM

Come join us and discuss the surprisingly humorous novel, "Everything is Illuminated" by Jonathan Safran Foer. I recently finished it and was very impressed. Always an innovator, I would like to do something a little different this time.
I am assigning the novel and the film adaptation for discussion. Watch the movie on your own time if you can, so we can discuss the two in tandem. Here is a review I wrote once finishing the novel (hopefully, this will get you excited about reading it!): "I utterly enjoyed this novel! The characters are endearing and interesting, and although quite a bit quirky, they are relatable. Jonathan Safran Foer wrote with a Gabriel Garcia Marquez style and flair. Alex/Sasha, the translator, added a great deal of humor, shifting the tone of the novel from a depressing holocaust-topical novel to a comedic one. The "driver's officious seeing-eye bitch" Sammy Davis Junior Junior actually made me laugh out loud. There were a lot of high points in this story, as comedy was masterfully interwoven with what is perhaps modern man's greatest tragedy." This will be our third Thursday evening discussion. We will meet once per month on a Thursday to discuss a selection that either I choose for the group or a member nominates. We will also meet one Sunday afternoon per month to discuss the novel that we democratically decide upon as a group.

there's also an OpenYale video lecture by Amy Hungerford on this book:
it was the student choice novel for the Spring 2008 iteration of ENGL 291 at Yale; a class on the American Novel since 1945. http://oyc.yale.edu/english/american-novel-since-1945/
