Alice Walker's "Possessing the Secret of Joy"

I have chosen a novel that I am sure will spark an interesting discussion for our March weeknight discussion: "Possessing the Secret of Joy" by Alice Walker. Boxall, the author of our anthology, calls it "an angry, impassioned defense of femininity, and of the female body, against the horrific violence of female genital mutilation". This novel was penned by Alice Walker in 1992. This book is available on audio TAPE, from the library.

Not everyone read the book (including myself) AND that did not get in the way of having a very intelligent and thoughtful conversation. Thank you to those who read it, because we would not have been able to discuss it at all had you not read it. Everyone is welcome at any book discussion even if you have never heard of the book. Great discussion.

I'm sorry that I seemed to be the only one who really enjoyed this book!

I'm glad we read this book even though it definitely wasn't my favorite. I will set up discussions for some Toni Morrison and Jeffrey Euginedes sometime soon; promise!

For those of you who were worried about the group's noise level combined with this time's book selection--our sponsor said: "I am not worried about the noise and maybe for Wednesday I will pull tables farther away from you. We have less families on Wednesday so you guys should be fine. Good conversation should be loud. I want everyone to have a good time discussing books."

It'll be fine, Borders likes having us there. They asked us to meet in the cafe. So far it is the only place that can house us all and we are much less disruptive there than at some of our past venues, like Sweetwater's or Olga's. I think as long as we remain orderly and don't try to talk over each other things will be A-OK.

Canton Public Library is awesome--they totally have this book! I found out doing my search that Walker is an activist writer--she also penned "The Color Purple".

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
