Although I am still ambivalent about Grass, I thank you all for the discussion. As usual, I came away with new insights and understanding.

If you want a more realistic novel by Grass, check out Crabwalk, about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff in 1945 and how it affected the narrator, whose son is slowly bcoming involved with contemporary right-wing racial groups.

I'll post my notes on Tin Drum on the Message Board later this morning. I enjoyed the discussion.

I'm sorry that I had to drop out at the last minute. I had intended to come, although I only read half the book, but I got caught up in a work obligation. See you all in June.

Hi all, I'm really sorry I won't be able to come to the meeting. I read The Tin Drum and really really enjoyed it. I so wanted to come to discuss the marvelous book but I needed to visit my daughter and grandsons. I hope to hear all about your discussion. David

Group, I had a hard time staying with The Tin Drum. I've finally built up a little momentum but I'm only half way through it, so I won't be coming. I await your insightful comments about the book.

Darn. I can't make it tomorrow. This is the 3rd time now and I still have yet to make it to a discussion! Hopefully next time.

Wouldn't you know, I suggested this book years ago, but now I'm too busy to read. Plus, I have it in the original language--it definitely would take me too long to read it.

Harriet - I'm glad to read your comment. I actually did get a mystery to read when I need to take a break from Gunter Grass. But I'm going to keep at it and hopefully will be able to finish it before our next meeting.

My policy is to read 100 pages of a book and then decide if I want to continue. I am now on page 65, and boy is that mystery on my bedside table starting to look good!

I enjoyed last months discussion but I have a long reading list. Anybody want to try to sell me on this? It may very well be amazing to some but so is Steinbeck, and I hate him.

I remember reading this book longer ago than I want to admit to, and not liking it one bit. However, I don't know if I've mellowed or improved my critical thinking skills since joining this group (yes, that must be it!) but when I picked up the book again, I was surprised. I found myself paying more attention to the writing style (thanks David for your recommendation of the writing ), questioning reasons for the actions and actually enjoying it! I'm really looking forward to next month's Meet Up to see what others think of it.
