Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle"

To celebrate Labor Day, we'll read "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. 1906 bestseller shockingly reveals intolerable labor practices and unsanitary working conditions in the Chicago stockyards as it tells the brutally grim story of a Slavic family that emigrates to America full of optimism but soon descends into numbing poverty, moral degradation, and despair. A fiercely realistic American classic that will haunt readers long after they've finished the last page. Available for free in Kindle.

Hi AACBG! I hope to put up a couple signs tomorrow pointing everyone in the right direction inside the Union. But as we are not an "official" group at the Union, I don't know if they will be allowed to stay up or not. When in doubt, go to Pizza Hut, face it, then turn straight around and there we will be.

There are two versions of this book out there -- the 1906 commercial version and the "uncensored original" found in the 1980s based on the 1905 serial version. Either version will work for the discussion.
According to the foreword in the uncensored copy, Sinclair used "Pilgrim's Progress" (another 1001 title) as the model for the plot. If I have time, I'm going to read that too.
