The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Celebrated novel traces the moral degeneration of a handsome young Londoner from an innocent fop into a cruel and reckless pursuer of pleasure and, ultimately, a murderer. As Dorian Gray sinks into depravity, his body retains perfect youth and vigor while his recently painted portrait reflects the ravages of crime and sensuality.

Also a first time book club attendee, I loved the discussion, particularly the focus on morality. I look forward to future meetings. However, be warned: I tried to get through Middlemarch for years and have never done it. Maybe this book club will finally motivate me to get through this doorstopper! Many thanks to the meeting organizers, and I enjoyed meeting everybody! Cheers, Alice.

This was the best discussion ever. It's really great when everyone joins in and adds to the mix. I always go away with new perspectives on things and what's important to people and what kind of things they get out of reading. Let's do it again!

For a first time ever book club attendee, I thoroughly enjoyed the meeting and discussion. I read the book years ago, but got so much more out of it this time after hearing others' opinions and views. I left thinking about the formation of morals, the extent of personal responsibility for one's actions and the definition of evil. I was sorry to see the discussion end but hope that the meeting on Middlemarch is equally entertaining and interesting.

    Just a reminder:
    1. This is not an official UofM event, so if you ask the information desk at the Union where the book club is, they'll be confused. We will be at the tables across from Pizza Hut on the ground floor -- which is sort of like a "daylight basement."
    2. has a fee to maintain this group on their site. Please bring $1 in cash or coin to each discussion you attend to help cover these costs.
    Happy Reading!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
