Free Class: Creating a Website

What is the purpose of a website?

This is a question my new students frequently ask, and for good reason. For better or for worse, digital photography and the internet has significantly changed the way we present our work. Ideally, the best way to showcase a portfolio would be in a studio setting with a printed portfolio. The size of the images, viewing distance, amount, quality, and color of the lighting, and mood and atmosphere of the room are all things that have an impact on the viewing experience. Now, this is a far cry from showcasing your work on Facebook, Flickr, 500px, or other online site that have image album options. While we can’t deny that these sites have great potential for driving traffic to your work, at the end of the day you are forfeiting the viewing experience.

Assuming that the studio setting is not something that you can afford yet, our next best option would be to create a website. Creating a website is an investment of time and resources, but you will be rewarded for your professionalism by having the ability to control how your audience views your work online. Join us as we teach you how to make a free website using Portfoliobox. During this class you will be able to work alongside your instructor and begin creating your own website. You can also choose to start your website before the class and come armed with questions. If you are interested in having your own domain and a Pro account with Portfoliobox, use the link provided and save $10!

Create your website here: http://www.portfoliobox.net/by/photogroup

In this class you will learn:

Hmmm.... I heard that you can upload hundreds of images as a free member. After uploading 50 images, however, the website says my image quota has reached and need to upgrade to Pro account. Anyone having this issue?

Hey Bhumsoo! After investigating this further I finally found a FAQ with the answer: "Free users can upload up to 40 images. Pro users can upload up to 1000 images." I'm sorry for the confusion, Ben and I both recall being able to upload far more photos than that - so this detail may have changed.

Just sent out an email with important info about the class. Just in case you don't make it to the bottom of the email (even though it is pretty short), be sure to read this: Your attendance is very important. I love teaching and I am excited to be able to offer this class for free! As many of you know I live in Columbus, so after a 3-hour drive I will be expecting to see all of you there. If you don't think you are going to be able to make it please change your RSVP now and make room for someone else. I would love to continue putting together events like this, so if you would like to continue seeing FREE educational events be sure to commit to your RSVP!

It looks like some of you have already started putting together a website and are exploring what Portfoliobox has to offer. That's fantastic! Come with questions :)

Unfortunately I have school Saturday mornings now. If you have a lot of interest for Sunday, I would be in!

Hey Ayana. Unfortunately I only had a couple other people contact me about Sunday and I will not be setting up another class for that day. I will try to do this again during the Winter months!

    Interested in how to proceed.

    October 20, 2013

    • Ua C.

Joan, You can either get started working on your website by using one of the links in the description and come to the class with questions already prepared or just show up with your laptop and some images you would like to put on your website and we will start it together. Either way is fine! :)
