What is the purpose of a website?
This is a question my new students frequently ask, and for good reason. For better or for worse, digital photography and the internet has significantly changed the way we present our work. Ideally, the best way to showcase a portfolio would be in a studio setting with a printed portfolio. The size of the images, viewing distance, amount, quality, and color of the lighting, and mood and atmosphere of the room are all things that have an impact on the viewing experience. Now, this is a far cry from showcasing your work on Facebook, Flickr, 500px, or other online site that have image album options. While we can’t deny that these sites have great potential for driving traffic to your work, at the end of the day you are forfeiting the viewing experience.
Assuming that the studio setting is not something that you can afford yet, our next best option would be to create a website. Creating a website is an investment of time and resources, but you will be rewarded for your professionalism by having the ability to control how your audience views your work online. Join us as we teach you how to make a free website using Portfoliobox. During this class you will be able to work alongside your instructor and begin creating your own website. You can also choose to start your website before the class and come armed with questions.
