Hidden Lake Gardens and Arboretum (Spring 2014)

  • May 10, 2014 · 8:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This was a big hit last year-- we had a great group and it was one of the best meetups of the year, in my opinion. That said, it was a little bit too early as many flowers were not out yet and the weeping willows didn't have all of their leaves. Hopefully a later date will increase our chances of finding more growth outside.

We will have great opportunities for macro shooters, B+W landscapes, color, infrared, or just regular straight shooting using your kit lens... film, digital, iPhone, Holga... bring your favorite camera(s) and you will find plenty of interesting things to shoot at Hidden Lake Gardens.

Spring will arrive eventually... let's check out Hidden Lake Gardens to see what they have going on in May!

755 acres of Gardens and Natural Areas

Flower Gardens
Plant Conservatory
Hosta Hillside
Dwarf Conifers
Hiking Trails
Biking
Picnic Area
Lake
Educational Classes
Weddings
Gift Shop

**I propose meeting at Hidden Lake Gardens when they open at 9AM.

Google says it is a 45 min. drive from the Starbuck's at Arborland (Washtenaw Ave., A2).

I will not be charging anything for the Shutterbugs for this meetup, but Hidden Lakes Gardens admission is $3.

Hidden Lake Gardens: Botanical Gardens and Arboretum
6214 Monroe Rd.
Tipton, Michigan 49287
(Located on M-50
eight miles west
of Tecumseh)

From the main parking lot next to their Conservatory, we will do a self-guided tour around some of the plants and around the main lake. There is an interesting stone wall by one of the roads, and there are pretty views of many trees as we make our way back to the Conservatory. If you enjoy shooting in conservatories, the ones at HLG might keep you busy for an hour or two-- it can be easy to lose yourself in there! And if it rains and people don't want to shoot outdoors, the Conservatory is a nice place to shoot and stay dry :)

It was so great to meet everyone today. Thanks for all the hard work planning and arranging and emailing that you did to organize this meetup, Frank, and all the meetups you do! It was a great success! And the weather was perfect, too!

Thanks for showing up on a sunny, free, as it turned out (bonus), day at Hidden Lake Gardens. I had a great time shooting and chatting with the folks who made it today. Thank you for making this a nice event :) And my biggest fear, that the weeping willows would not have enough leaves growing yet, was unfounded. I think I have some decent IR shots.

There were several "No shows" today as well. A gentle reminder that we really hope people will show up to our events or let us know if they need to cancel. We will be removing folks who have three or more "No Shows" to Shutterbug meetups (our Organizer sent out an email with this policy in early March). We want to continue to host events for interested, active members and not continue to waste our time on people who are perpetual "No Shows." Some people have recently racked-up two, three, six, ten and even twelve "No Shows."

Hi! Looking at this description, I don't see where we're meeting up in A2 at 8:15. It sounds like Starbuck's as per the messages mentioning it below, but then someone said it's under construction, so I'm not sure if that's the place we're meeting? could someone let me know? I can drive up to 3 passengers from Ann Arbor. :-)

So is Sanjay and we are in Clinton, about a few mins away from HLG.

  • Frank K.

Looks like we left a few min. late and there s traffic, so we may be 10-15 min. late. Sorry, start w/o me if you'd like. I was thinking of parking next to the Conservatory and walking around that large lake counter-clockwise, starting with the flower garden and continuing on outdoors. I'll message when we arrive. See you soon! Frank

That's ok, no rain today, we'll probably wander off in small groups and meet up later on the path or in the conservatory. No direct sunlight... not too bad.

I have just been made aware of a plant sale going on from 10-2 on the day of our meetup at HLG. So there will be people visiting for that too. For more, check out p. 8: http://hiddenlakegardens.msu.edu/uploads/files/Spring_2014.pdf

Thanks. I was going to email the group about car pooling anyway. I can't think of a coffee place with better free parking (the Bigby lot close-by is horrible), so I'll leave that suggestion as-is, just the parking lot there as a drop-off/pick-up spot for Elisha.

This will be my first meet up since I have moved from Seattle to Michigan. Really excited to meet new people and get out and see more of that this beautiful state.

Welcome to S.E. Michigan, Vicky! This is a nice location... hopefully you can see some of the more interesting spots in our state through meetups with the Shutterbugs and other groups in the area! There are many neat things to see in "The Mitten." See you Sat.!

Would love to go if somebody could pick me up in Dundee.

    March 21, 2014

    • Frank K.

I had to arrange for a ride from A2, Kristen, but our car can't make it down to Dundee for you. I don't see your driver from last year in this year's group. Maybe ask one more time in a new comment? Hopefully you'll be able to catch a ride with someone who lives near your neck of the woods, Kristen....

HI, all, this will be my first meetup with you and this sounds like so much fun! I'm really looking forward to it!

Out meetup there was fun last year... I'm expecting more of the same. It will be nice to meet and shoot with you, Debbie :)

Well, the leaves on the trees haven't come out yet-- spring has been cool and growth has been slow to appear. But we're going to keep this meetup date as-is. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone there at 9AM. If you cannot make it, please update your RSVP status to "No" so we don't wait for you to arrive at the shoot. I would rather have people change their RSVP status to "No" than have to make folks as "no shows." Thanks-- looking forward to seeing people at HLG on Sat. -Frank

Would love to go but doing a 1,000 mile/24 hrs motorcycle ride that day with a few friends.

    1 · March 20, 2014

    • Frank K.

That sounds pretty intense... have a great ride, Bob. I'm not sure if you've been to HLG before, but we can always go again as a group (or if you have gone and you'd like to share a trip with some other 'bugs, let me know and I can help you set-up a small outing on another date). This place is easy to explore and enjoy any time of year.

I have been past the MSU grounds near the Irish Hills with my wife. It is a very large tract of land. I have not walked the grounds but I would like to do it sometime this year. The motorcycle ride is the 4th annual. This year we ride by 5 state capitols and end back where we started. Lansing Mi, Indianapolis In, Frankfort Ky, Charlston WV, Colombus Oh. and back to I-275 and 8 mile Rd. Leaving 8mile/I-275 at 4 a.m. and returning before midnight. (Iron Butt Association certified) The ride this year is named "Capitol Punishment" :o)
