The Shoot!

Please join the Shutterbugs for a day trip to the Silver Lake Dunes (1st picture courtesy of Kiran and 3rd at the bottom courtesy of patrick) and Little Sable Point Lighthouse (2nd picture courtesy of Kiran).

This is one of several members (Patrick and Kiran to name a few) favorite spots in the state for shooting landscapes. It gives access to sand/desert settings, water bodies and a lighthouse all within a few square miles.  The high sun provides some of the dramatic scenes to capture in a photograph. If you have a Graduated ND/Split ND/Reverse ND filters and didn't find a suitable place to use it or you were thinking about getting one, this would be a great time to do so.

Please RSVP by 5pm Wednesday, August 20th so your event hosts can make car pool arrangements.

You can check out Silver Lake Dunes photos at 500px or on last year's A2 Shutterbugs shoot.

Optional Camping Portion: Up to 4 members, will be able to camp for the evening at a site Patrick has already reserved in order to maximize sunset, astrophotography (weather permitting), and sunrise photo opportunities.  Patrick has already reserved the campsite at http://www.silverlakerc.com/ at the cost of $10 per camper. Once reservations are complete, we can determine how many tents and what equipment is needed.

Shutterbugs interested in the camping portion should make note in the comments as it is first come.  Shutterbugs who reply late but would like to camp are welcome to make their own arrangements.

Sunset at Little Sable

Logistics

On August 23rd, we will leave Carpool parking on M-14, Miller Road Exit in Ann Arbor at 9 AM and reach Silver Lake Dunes by 2 PM, stopping around the Grand Rapids area for lunch. We will do some dune hiking and shoot pictures around the area till 5:30 PM. After that we’ll have dinner in the area. I'll setup the carpooling options in such a way that after the dinner we can:

A)  Return back to Ann Arbor by 11 PM

B) Visit the Little Sable Lighthouse at 7:30 to capture the beautiful sunset over the lake Michigan and reach Ann Arbor by 1 AM.

C) Stay at the Silver Lake Resort & Campground and return to Ann Arbor by 2 PM on Sunday.  Currently one campsite that can accommodate 4 people has been reserved.  The first 3 respondents can stay at this site.  Others who would like to camp are welcome to make their own arrangements.

Please refer to the section below to find further information:

Where to shoot: Silver Lake Dunes and Little Sable Point Lighthouse

Where to meet: Carpool Parking - 2901 Miller Road, Ann Arbor, MI

What to bring: Camera, Lens(es), a tripod, ND/GND/Split ND filters if you have, Water, Snacks/Energy Bar and anything else that you will want to shoot pictures.

Please note this is a sandy, windy environment and you may need to protect your equipment!!!  Though there are many ways to protect your camera which are dependent upon your gear, risk tolerance, and general preferences, I protect my lens face with a clear filter or ND filter while protecting my camera body and lens barrel with a freezer bag and rubber bands.  Also, at all costs, avoid changing lenses in such an environment, so bringing one lens for the dunes hike can be prudent.  I will bring an 18 - 55.  You can investigate the best method for you by visiting various sites, such as:

What to wear: Comfortable outdoor clothing, Hiking/Tennis Shoes (something for the sand), A hat if you prefer (It may get hot) since there is very limited shade.  Also rain gear may be needed since the dunes are interesting to shoot in rainy weather as well (see image 3 below).

What will it cost: It is a free event. If you are carpooling, you will be expected to split the fuel cost with the driver. The camping option costs $10 per person.

Carpooling Options: Depending on the attendee responses, I'll setup carpooling options. So please indicate your preference of option A, B, or C when answering the RSVP questions.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Note for Campers: Please bring what you would normally bring to a campsite.  If you have questions, please feel free to ask in the comments thread or email Patrick at morganpt at umich.edu

Note: This is not an instructional photo-walk. Our goal is to make photographs together, not to teach how to make photographs. Questions are fine and learning from one another is important, lets just make sure we direct our focus on shooting.

Diane & I were thinking of hitting US 23N straight out once she picks me up. Where are we stopping for lunch at GR? Do we have a lunch place picked out? There are lots of great restaurants there. Do we coordinate with Patrick once we are close to GR?

    August 23

    • Patrick M.

There are addresses to lunch inside the email along with driving directions, maps, itinerary, numbers, times, etc. Though there are great restaurants in GR, I chose a spot along the highway that has several quick options (zoup, jimmy johns etc). If you had other suggestions, just give me a call or text. See ya soon!

Sounds perfect! We certainly don't want to spend too much time NOT photographing. I got the address, we will see you there!

  • DianeG

Thanks!!! I have to find her email address. Must move quickly to find lodging

Hi, I didn't fill out your Q correctly. I actually prefer to drive and have a lux to make it more comfy for whoever wants to come with. I want to stay the night at a nearby inn. If a camper or someone like minded could ride with me, that would be fine. I really don't want to go if I can't find someone to make the drive with. But I have to know what is up soon so I can book a room. Really looking for a good photo a la Terry Abrams to post to my web site. BTW weather looks clear 10 PM to 5 AM.

Hi DianeG and welcome! This is absolutely fine. You should also message Alekhya who is also going and looking for a place to stay on Saturday night. You two may be able to find a place together for that evening! Cheers and I'll send you the itinerary and such after receiving your email! ~pat

    Hi all Shutterbugs,

Interested bugs can still join this meetup! Since there have been a few RSVP changes over the past few hours, I've extended the RSVP time. You can now sign up unto tomorrow, Friday at 5pm. Please note that the 4 camping spots are taken, so those who are interested in this potentially unforgettable photographic opportunity can either plan on returning to A2 Saturday evening or can make sleeping arrangements on their own for Saturday night at Silver Lake.

    Hope to see you there!

Hi all soon-to-be dune shooters! I'm gathering the questions that everyone submitted and this evening will draft a tentative itinerary that includes car pooling groups, a lunch stop, a map of the dunes including meeting points, and the key shooting areas. I should have this itinerary to you tonight! Stay tuned:-)

    • Patrick M.

Also a reminder (with the exception of James, who will meet us there), please fill out the questionnaire if you would like to carpool. We are still waiting for a couple of responses. Without this info, it would be impossible to include those who have not filled out the questionnaire in the plans and arrange for their carpooling. Thanks!

Hi All! I don't have ND filter and it's too late to order online. Any suggestions?

    August 20

    • Alekhya

So I guess I will borrow yours. Also, I do not have clear filter. I called BestBuy and they don't carry the ones I need. Thanks for coming to my rescue!

      August 20

    • Patrick M.

No worries, I have a 67mm clear filter also that you can use with my step up converters:-)

I have lived at Silver Lake; this is a great photo op. Don't forget water and sunscreen. Oh, and do heed the warning about protecting your gear. Sand gets everywhere. Have fun.

    1 · August 13

    • Patrick M.

Thanks Barb! You're right about the sand. Last time I went, I was doing 5 - 10 minute exposures for several hours and my ND filter was really scratched up by invisible sand particles. If my lens was exposed, it would be toast and I would converted it into a thermos: http://petapixel.com/...

I RSVP'ed for option A but I think I would like to change it to B. I need to carpool with someone because I don't have a car.
