Please join the Shutterbugs for a day trip to the Silver Lake Dunes (1st picture courtesy of Kiran and 3rd at the bottom courtesy of patrick) and Little Sable Point Lighthouse (2nd picture courtesy of Kiran).
This is one of several members (Patrick and Kiran to name a few) favorite spots in the state for shooting landscapes. It gives access to sand/desert settings, water bodies and a lighthouse all within a few square miles. The high sun provides some of the dramatic scenes to capture in a photograph. If you have a Graduated ND/Split ND/Reverse ND filters and didn't find a suitable place to use it or you were thinking about getting one, this would be a great time to do so.
Please RSVP by 5pm Wednesday, August 20th so your event hosts can make car pool arrangements.
You can check out Silver Lake Dunes photos at 500px or on last year's A2 Shutterbugs shoot.
Optional Camping Portion: Up to 4 members, will be able to camp for the evening at a site Patrick has already reserved in order to maximize sunset, astrophotography (weather permitting), and sunrise photo opportunities. Patrick has already reserved the campsite at http://www.silverlakerc.com/ at the cost of $10 per camper. Once reservations are complete, we can determine how many tents and what equipment is needed.
Shutterbugs interested in the camping portion should make note in the comments as it is first come. Shutterbugs who reply late but would like to camp are welcome to make their own arrangements.
On August 23rd, we will leave Carpool parking on M-14, Miller Road Exit in Ann Arbor at 9 AM and reach Silver Lake Dunes by 2 PM, stopping around the Grand Rapids area for lunch. We will do some dune hiking and shoot pictures around the area till 5:30 PM. After that we’ll have dinner in the area. I'll setup the carpooling options in such a way that after the dinner we can:
A) Return back to Ann Arbor by 11 PM
B) Visit the Little Sable Lighthouse at 7:30 to capture the beautiful sunset over the lake Michigan and reach Ann Arbor by 1 AM.
C) Stay at the Silver Lake Resort & Campground and return to Ann Arbor by 2 PM on Sunday. Currently one campsite that can accommodate 4 people has been reserved. The first 3 respondents can stay at this site. Others who would like to camp are welcome to make their own arrangements.
Please refer to the section below to find further information:
Where to shoot: Silver Lake Dunes and Little Sable Point Lighthouse
Where to meet: Carpool Parking - 2901 Miller Road, Ann Arbor, MI
What to bring: Camera, Lens(es), a tripod, ND/GND/Split ND filters if you have, Water, Snacks/Energy Bar and anything else that you will want to shoot pictures.
Please note this is a sandy, windy environment and you may need to protect your equipment!!! Though there are many ways to protect your camera which are dependent upon your gear, risk tolerance, and general preferences, I protect my lens face with a clear filter or ND filter while protecting my camera body and lens barrel with a freezer bag and rubber bands. Also, at all costs, avoid changing lenses in such an environment, so bringing one lens for the dunes hike can be prudent. I will bring an 18 - 55. You can investigate the best method for you by visiting various sites, such as:
What to wear: Comfortable outdoor clothing, Hiking/Tennis Shoes (something for the sand), A hat if you prefer (It may get hot) since there is very limited shade. Also rain gear may be needed since the dunes are interesting to shoot in rainy weather as well (see image 3 below).
What will it cost: It is a free event. If you are carpooling, you will be expected to split the fuel cost with the driver. The camping option costs $10 per person.
Carpooling Options: Depending on the attendee responses, I'll setup carpooling options. So please indicate your preference of option A, B, or C when answering the RSVP questions.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Note for Campers: Please bring what you would normally bring to a campsite. If you have questions, please feel free to ask in the comments thread or email Patrick at morganpt at umich.edu
Note: This is not an instructional photo-walk. Our goal is to make photographs together, not to teach how to make photographs. Questions are fine and learning from one another is important, lets just make sure we direct our focus on shooting.
