Being an Ally

This location is shown only to members

In this meetup we will discuss how to be an anti-racist ally. We will discuss what strategies have worked for us in calling out racism in situations with friends, family, and co-workers. We will talk about how being an anti-racist ally is fundamentally connected to being allies to members of all marginalized groups. All who wish to partake in a respectful discussion are welcome to attend.

We hope to have a series of these discussions once every few weeks over the next few months. Please contact Nick if you would like to help organize and/or facilitate these events, or if you have ideas for future topics.

The Pappenheim Library at Community Change, Inc. is wheelchair accessible.

I took too long to sign up for the next meeting! I hope that this doesn't mean I won't be seeing some of you again and continuing the conversation. SOMEBODY let me know if room opens up (...please)

Join the waitlist and you should get word if it opens up! That's what I did anyway.

Maybe the 3 of us can have our own meetup haha. We can be the extended version of this one.

I think it is very encouraging that so many people want to be involved in this cause! I definitely agree that the overflow should all get together that night and continue this discussion. It looks like there is enough attendance to warrant it. There are plenty of places near the meeting site to have this discussion.

Given that there almost as many of us on the Wait List as are able to attend the meeting, an "Overflow Meetup" makes great sense to me.

Nice! I just remembered that I'm teaching a class that night so is there any chance that everyone would want to meet up Thursday evening instead? Just putting it out there. Otherwise I will have to try and make the next one.

I actually had work that night and took a vacation day to be able to attend. I wouldn't be able to take off Thursday too on such short notice. Oh well, maybe Nick will consider switching location to a larger site that will accommodate all the attendees who wish to participate in this event. Thanks Nick for creating this event! There is certainly a lot of interest in it!

Wow, it's amazing that so many people are interested! I think we can check and see if there's another night next week that Community Change would be free to host another meetup on the same topic. Will take a few days to figure out.

The RSVP limit is partially because the space in the Pappenheim Library is limited, but also because it's hard to have anti-racism discussions in really large groups. If anyone would like to organize something simultaneous I'd be happy to turn it into a meetup!

Cool, I'm down to meet on a weekend, too. If anybody just wants to grab a coffee and talk it up feel free to email me: katerinam503@gmail.com.

And thanks, Nick, for setting this up!

Nick I think it is a positive for promoting anti-racism that so many people sign up as to have to create more meet-ups and I would love to organize a simultaneous group. Can you email me at Janis_McQuarrie@msn.com with info that you would be using so we can all be on same page with our meetups? Anyone have suggestions as to where on Wednesday we should all meet?

So it looks like we have a few options here. 1. We could split into two groups simultaneously like was proposed. For Janis, since you took a day off to make it this day, it would make sense for you to join either group. Maybe Nick should let you join the main group to ensure that you get a chance to join a discussion that night even if the late registrants don't meet up on Wed night. 2. I'd prefer for all of us to be together in a large group, here some info/lecture, then break off into smaller

groups, maybe even into certain constituencies and talk about how racism has affected us. Kinda like a workshop style. I used to be a diversity trainer/facilitator in Uni and this method worked well. Then later come back together as a group and maybe share what we talked about? Just some ideas.

I too would like one large group, at least at some point in the evening/week. As a participant in other groups I've seen the split up/reconvene strategy work well, and trust Tatiana's facilitation experience on the feasibility of this for us. (Not to volunteer her for performing that role here.) I don't suppose that Community Change has access to a larger space in their building that would be available for at least some of this night's event?

I wouldn't mind helping out or facilitate in any way. Looks like all we need is a place to do this...Anyone else have any other suggestions?

This is the link to the article I brought up on how racism manifests itself in predominantly white liberal and progressive spaces:
