  • I am posting this more for informational purposes.  I am not going to try an organize a meetup, but if you see me please feel free to say hello.   If you are into astronomy these things are kind of cool.  The main attractions are the telescopes others bring and are more than happy to share with the public.

    Vernal Equinox Celebration

On Saturday March 23, OMSI, Rose City Astronomers and Vancouver Sidewalk Astronomers will celebrate the vernal equinox and the beginning of spring with a free Star Party at both Rooster Rock State Park and L.L. "Stub" Stewart State Park! From beginners to experts of all ages, here's your opportunity to view the stars and other celestial objects up close and personal through telescopes. Viewing highlights includes Jupiter, Saturn and the moon. As the sky darkens, will view the deep sky objects including the Orion Nebula, Beehive star cluster and more!

On the scheduled day of each OMSI Star Party, it is suggested that interested visitors call the OMSI Star Parties Hotline,
[masked] Press #3 then #5, or check the OMSI Star Parties web site for possible weather-related cancellations. The event starts at sunset and is free with $5 parking per vehicle. Warm clothing and a flashlight with red light are recommended. Personal telescopes and binoculars are welcome.

Well we drove out there anyway...what a GORGEOUS evening it was!! Nary a cloud in the sky...I think OMSI may have jumped the gun on this one. Oh well, next time!

Just checked the OMSI site and both of the Star Party's are cancelled. How sad. Next one is April 20th.

  • Bill M.

My + one cancelled, so I have room for 2-3 more, depending on how comfy people want to get. Going to Roster Rock. Will be at Sunset Transit Center at 6:30 to leave from there. I will be carrying a Meetup piece of paper, so you know it's me. I-26, I-84, so if you need a ride and not too far from the freeway, I can pick you up. Like the Hollywood Transit Center.....

Would love to car pool with someone! Anywhere near a max line to meet up or Beaverton

    March 17, 2013

    • Tessa B.

      Yeah what time?

      March 23, 2013

    • Bill M.

Let's say 6:30, gives us time to get there and also find a good spot to put down a blanket I am bringing.

      March 23, 2013

  • Penny M.

It's hard to believe, when the sun is out and the clouds are breaking up. If anyone hears ofncancellation, can you let the rest of us know. Also, did you know there are two star parties? One about 25 miles west of Portland too! Wonder if they are independent of each other?

    P.S.
    12:15p

I was JUST on the phone to the "hotline" and got wrongly directed by the info they had (Call[masked] and press #2...just gets a response "invalid entry") so I hit 0 and talked to a body. They stated it was "not officially cancelled as yet, but when the weather forecast calls for cloudiness, OMSI has not gone forward with these events in the past."

    LOLOLOL!

Ok, so what ELSE is going on tonight??

Does anyone know where to get a "flashlight with a red light", like is suggested, or perhaps a red piece of plastic to hold over my regular flashlight? Or am I making this a bigger deal than it is? This is my first time at one of these, can any veteran gazers tell me how crucial this red light flashlight is? Thanks!

If you have a smartphone you can also download flashlight apps where you can change the color of the light. I used the red option on my phone to go kiwi-spotting at night in NZ - it doesn't bother the birds like a normal white light.

ALSO, if U have a red nail polish that's not super dense, I found I could coat the lens of a flashlight and use it, even tho' it's a girlie solution!

    +1 and room for 3

    March 23, 2013

  • Bill M.

I have room for 3 if you don't mind getting cozy. We could meet at the Sunset Transit Center. We are planning to go to Roster Rock. SO if you would like to join us and need a ride, please let us know.

As it turns out, I won't be able to make this after all. Have fun!

    Sure can! My number is[masked]

    March 21, 2013

  • Alex M.

I've got room for three (four if you don't mind getting cozy) in my car. I live right by Gateway so if anyone wants to meet there and carpool just let me know!

Erin- If you have the northwest forest pass or the national park pass, they do not apply to this park. On the oregon state parks website there is mention of annual passes, but they look to be park specific. There's an info line on the page you could call:[masked]

Does anyone know how late this event goes to?

Also to confirm - the Starbucks in the Fred Meyer there?

      March 20, 2013

    • Alex M.

Yes, that would be the one. I didn't realize there were two in the same parking lot!

      March 21, 2013

  • Roger W.

I have room for 2 people from the Happy Valley/Oregon City area.

    March 20, 2013

    • Amy R

Hey Roger, can I have a ride ?

      March 21, 2013

  • Erin

    Hi y'all. Two questions:
    1) Just to check about parking--I have an annual NW Park pass, is this suitable for this park? (I know that this pass does not cover some parks.)
    2) So there are two areas to go to--Rooster Rock and Stewart Park? Where will most people be? Thanks!

Just to be clear, this event was posted more for informational purposes and not so much as an actual meetup. If anyone wants to plan more of a social event out of this you are more than welcome. For those on the West side, they have the same event at LL Stub State Park as well. There is not a end time. It basically ends whenever the last person packs up their telescope. Most of the crowd seems to stay for an hour or two after it gets dark. The start time is just an estimate, the event itself actually starts at sunset. There is a seperate meetup for the Hubble Telescope exhibit on Sunday though.

I went to this last year, had a BLAST!! Fair warning, a thick blanket for both underneath and on top of you recommended! While it wasn't that cold at first, after lying on the ground awhile and watching the stars, it got pretty chilly (even w/the wine we had...ssssshhhh!) *gglz*
Not only did we see some great shooting stars (even a GREEN one!), we tracked a cpl satellites too.
