Didn’t make it to the annual Fisher Poets Gathering last month in Astoria? Went to the gathering but didn’t get enough of the gritty, salty, tar-brushed, hilarious tales from these bards of the commercial fishing fleets?
Join Moe Bowstern for a night of songs and stories, featuring Jon Broderick and Jay Speakman, and Clem Starck!
Jon Broderick plays the guitar and banjo; Jay plays incredible riffs from a leather case full of harmonicas. Both men sing in lovely harmonizing tenors, repurposing well known songs with witty lyrics that tell of mud flats, cannery beauties and skookum trollers, all drawn from their experiences fishing in Maine and Alaska.
Tough guy beat poet Clem Starck, who won the 1995 Oregon Book Award for his first collection, Journeyman's Wages, will also be joining us! Sweetest guy ever, his poems will punch you in the face and then kiss it and make it all better.
This year Moe made a row of white-haired ladies gasp and cover their mouths all at the same time when she related a skipper’s particularly juicy quote in a true story from her years as a deckhand in the Alaskan salmon, cod, halibut, herring and crab fishing fleets. Who knows what tale she will tell?
To find out, come on down to the basement lounge and have some quaffs and laughs! See you there!
