* Someone asked if I planned to post this hike again as it has been how we have started off the New Year for the past few years. Work may interfere this year for me and I really wont know until the day before. If I don't make it, someone else can lead the way! It has been a great way to start off the New Year! *
Please note the time. If you plan to ring in the New Year with a hangover, this might be too early.
Meeting location: On the bottom floor of the parking deck.
Meeting Time: 9:00AM
Hike Distance: 4.6 miles
Hike Difficulty: Moderate
Drive Distance: 42 miles
Directions: Take I-84E to exit 28 Bridal Veil. Follow the road to the first stop sign, turn right and the parking area is immediately to the right.
Kids and LEASHED dogs are welcome on this hike.
Remember it is the cold and wet season, so please dress appropriately.
Starting in a fern-filled forest, the trail climbs uphill for 0.6 mile before reaching the top of Coopey Falls, a 150 to 175 foot horsetail waterfall, and the footbridge crossing the creek. Continuing on, the trail begins to switchback uphill for 1.6 miles before reaching the ridge crest. Turn left at a junction to a spectacular gorge viewpoint. Use extreme caution at the steep cliff edge. Some nice flower features of this hike are the wildflower displays (which peaks in May) of blue-eyed grass, star-flowered Smiliacina, and trillium at lower levels. Also you get a grand view of the Gorge once you reach the top. There is even a bench to rest yourself on that overlooks the entire area.
Portland Hikers Field guide:
It's winter in the Pacific Northwest, so I'll go out on a limb and predict cold and wet weather. If that's a deal killer, please don't RSVP.
