8 Mile Hamilton Mountain Hike

Hike Details

Meeting Place:Bottom Level of the Gateway Parking Deck Entrance

Meeting Time: 8:00

Hike Distance: Approx 8 miles.

Hike Difficulty: I would rate it as strong moderate.

Drive Distance: Approx 70 miles round trip

Kids and Dogs? Only if well behaved, and dogs MUST be leashed.

We will be parking at Beacon Rock and starting the hike from there.  We will also be taking the 'More Difficult' route.

This is part of the Beacon Rock State Park and Washington State now requires a $10 parking pass. They do ticket. Washington State Discover Passes are only $30, so if you plan to hike/visit a few places in the next year, an annual pass might be a better option.  The NW Forest Pass is NOT valid at state parks!

Please bring plenty of water! If you have injuries or can't maintain a decent pace, please do not sign up for this hike.  I don't plan to go fast, but it is too long of a hike to constantly be playing 'stop and go' outside of what would be considered the norm.

It is also a longer hike than usual, so please don't make afternoon plans that day.  It's Fall in the PNW, expect cold and wet weather and dress accordingly.

Right out of the Portland Hiker’s Field Guide : “This trail has a feast of features for hikers, including waterfalls, craggy cliffs, deep forests, superb vistas, and a nice loop option for the trek.“ There is a longer description of the hike at that webpage, but ignore the part about no parking fee.

We will probably do just the trail up to Hamilton Mountain, then follow it down to the Hardy Creek Trail.  Here is a link to a map.

The chance of rain keep rising, so assume it will be a wet hike. With rain comes mud, so bringing a spare set of shoes for post hike would be a good idea.
