History Pub - Re-remembering Punjabis of early 1900s Oregon

Join me for beer and history, sponsored by the Oregon Historical Society, Holy Names Heritage Center and McMenamins, in which you'll hear lively local or regional history while you enjoy a frosty pint or two of handcrafted ale.

This month topic: "From The Dalles to Astoria: Re-remembering Punjabis of early 1900s Oregon"

This November marks the final History Pub for 2012, presented by McMenamins, Holy Names Heritage Center, and OHS. Johanna Ogden, an independent historian, will highlight the[masked] Punjabi population of the Columbia River, their formation of the radical Ghadar party in Astoria and its role in the Indian independence, and offer thoughts on the silencing of their story. Bruce LaBrack, Prof Emeritus, University of the Pacific, Stockton, will provide the larger context of Punjabi communities on the West Coast, and legal and extra-legal proscriptions that impacted their lives. Both speakers will offer context and precedence on anti-Sikh violence post 9/11, including last summer's Wisconsin Sikh Gurdwara shootings.

Please note that there will be a Food Collection box benefiting the Oregon Food Bank at the entrance to the theater! I would very much appreciate it (and so would the Food Bank), if you could bring some non-perishable food donations with you!

I am hosting a Happy Hour in the Courtyard Restaurant beforehand as well, you can sign up for it here:

Very interesting presentation - I am amazed how some historical facts get denied entry into the "official" records. Pretty sad!
