8 Mile Hamilton Mountain Hike

Hike Details

Meeting Place:Bottom Level of the Gateway Parking Deck Entrance

Meeting Time: 8:30

Hike Distance: Approx 8 miles.

Hike Difficulty: I would rate it as strong moderate.

Drive Distance: Approx 70 miles round trip

We will be parking at Beacon Rock and starting the hike from there.  We will also be taking the 'More Difficult' route.

It is winter in the PNW.  Please do NOT sign up for this if your participation requires nice/warm weather.  Seriously.  But that said, we may not summit the mountain depending on conditions.  Still some beautiful waterfalls to see, and if we turn back early we may hike Beacon Rock instead.

This is part of the Beacon Rock State Park and Washington State requires a $10 parking pass. They do ticket. Washington State Discover Passes are only $30, so if you plan to hike/visit a few places in the next year, an annual pass may be a better option.  The NW Forest Pass is NOT valid at state parks!

If you have injuries or can't maintain a decent pace, please do not sign up for this hike.  I don't plan to go fast, but it is too long of a hike to constantly be playing 'stop and go' outside of what would be considered the norm.

It is also a longer hike than the usual ones I post, so please don't make afternoon plans that day.  It's Winter in the PNW, expect cold and wet weather and dress accordingly.

Right out of the Portland Hiker’s Field Guide : “This trail has a feast of features for hikers, including waterfalls, craggy cliffs, deep forests, superb vistas, and a nice loop option for the trek.“

We will probably do just the trail up to Hamilton Mountain, then follow it down to the Hardy Creek Trail.  Here is a link to a map.

I want to add to Dave's note....I climbed Hamilton all the way to the summit 2 weeks back: it was VERY treacherous and I WAS prepared with poles, crampons and the ten essentials. The ice storm from 2 weeks back left a 2-3 inch coating on everything and then snow covered it all, but in windy spots, it's all ice. It's an AMAZING hike, but I STRONGLY suggest show shoes, or those slip on crampons (you can get them for around 50 bucks at REI)...If it's as icy as it was, you won't even make it up to the trail head (the road is closed and you have to hike up from Beacon Rock)...I am excited to d it again, though, beautiful hike!

I did the loop on New Years Day and used microspikes and Msr shoes. Less ice then but they were still needed. Poles too.

Just to be clear, we may not go all the way to the summit on this hike. This isn't a hiking group and some people don't have all the snow/ice gear (including myself), plus this past year there have been a lot of people sign up for hikes that were beyond their fitness level. I've hiked this in the snow before no problem, but I was very hesitant about posting this as a group event. Plan to do it all, but just know that we may turn back early depending on conditions and how everyone is doing.
