Mullica River Trail, Wharton State Forest (2B9.5)

The Mullica River Trail links the historic towns of Atsion and Batsto in Wharton State Forest. The trail has little elevation change and is mostly sandy paths and old roads. Trail passes through a variety of pineland forest types and wetlands along the Mullica River. We will meet in Batsto and do a car shuttle to Atsion. We will then hike the trail back to Batsto.

Along the way we will take a break at the Mullica River Wilderness Campsite to check out the recent changes that have changed the camp from open camping for 100 to ten individual campsites limited to 6 people each. This change has eliminated the group camping option and will effect the upcoming Mullica River Canoe Camping trip in June.

There will be an optional post-hike dinner at the Pic-A-Lilli Inn in Atsion.

The rating for this hike is 2B9.5

2 = Moderate (steady, comfortable pace)

B = Soft ground/sand/carriage trails

9.5 is the mileage

Rain cancels.

    Very fun hike, and dinner at the Pic-a-Lilly an added bonus! Thanks to all who are posting pictures.

    Many unexpected things turned out --(nicely). Cloudy weather turned into a beautiful blue sky. My prediction of wet & soft sand( hard on the ankles and the calves ) trail was a dry and harder trail most of the time. And, CLASS ACTION-- 18 people filed on their toe frostbites!

    Peaceful day under the bluest sky. Crossing the stream barefoot made the hike fun and special. Thanks.

    Hi Rich, I'd like to take one of my friends, do you think this is do-able for someone fit but a beginner hiker?

      Hi Sylvie, This is an easy hike except that the distance may be a bit too mush for someone who does not do a lot of walking. We will take our time to enjoy the places we are hiking through. As long as they are fit, it's probably okay.

      Thanks Rich, my friend spooked by the length of the hike. Another time then!
