Brendan Byrne State Forest Hike (2B7)

  • March 30, 2013 · 10:00 AM

Join us for a really neat loop hike that will follow the level and mostly sandy Cranberry Trail to Pakim Pond. We’ll travel at a moderate and steady pace. Bring an ample supply of water, some snacks and lunch if you wish.  After walking around the pond there will be a lunch break beside the pond. Then we’ll return to where we began by way of the Batona Trail. The Batona Trail has a few ups and downs, but is fundamentally flat. Total distance is approximately 7 miles. Optional post-hike meal.

Directions/ Meeting Place and Time:

The meeting time and place for the hike is 10:00 am in the Forest Office’s parking lot. From the traffic circle at the intersection of NJ 70 and NJ 72, follow NJ 72 east 1.0 mile and turn left at a sign for Brendan Byrne State Forest. Take the first right (Shinns Road) and the Forest Office and its parking lot are on the left. A link for the Forest’s website is: http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/byrne.html

Thanks Jeff for a great hike - beautiful light, clean air, the sights and sounds of nature, and the perfect hiking pace for the group. It was fund meeting new people and re-connecting with old friends.

What does 2B7 mean? Looking forward to getting very active in meetup groups this spring and summer particularly related to hiking !

Hi Katie! "2B7" is the Appalachian Mountain Club Hike Rating for this hike. It's a number-letter-number system indicating PACE-TERRAIN-MILEAGE. All Delaware Valley Chapter hikes and backpacks include a rating. Saturday's hike will be "2"-- a Moderate Pace (steady, comfortable), over "B"--
Soft ground/sand/carriage trails for 7 miles. You can read about the entire AMC-DV Chapter Hike Rating system at this link: http://www.amcdv.org/... . Hope that helps! See you Saturday.
