NOTE: This trip is an opportunity for experienced hikers only. It involves significant elevation gain, rough terrain and exposure. You will be screened before being accepted to the trip. The trip leader is Barb Blythe. Rich Pace is facilitating the appearance of this trip on Meetup.
We have a few remaining openings that can still be filled by the beginning of the week of June 10th. If you are serious about joining this hut to hut adventure, then RSVP and answer the questions. You will be contacted this weekend and sent further information.
Join our journey – last in a series! Enjoy strenuous climbs, dynamic 360 degree views all while adding Appalachian Trail mileage and “checking-off” multiple 4000’ footers from your White Mountain list. Our trek includes Madison and Carter Notch huts as well as a stay at Joe Dodge Lodge – hut cuisine and camaraderie to delight your wilderness soul. Pre-trip hike required.
Cost for this year is $311.00. This includes 4-nights lodging, breakfast / dinner each day and AMC shuttle to the Appalachia trail head. (our cars will remain safely parked at Pinkham Notch).

Sunday, June 30. Will be our travel day and arrival at Pinkham. Your dinner is included. We will have a group logistics meeting in the evening after dinner. This time will be spent reviewing our route, gear, trails, and upcoming weather conditions. Our cars will remain at Pinkham.
Monday, July 1. After breakfast our merry group will climb aboard the AMC shuttle to the Appalachia trail head. Our trek now begins. If weather is kind we will include a summit of Mt. Adams on our way to Madison Hut, our home for the evening. Mileage is about 5.5 with 1000’ per mile (5050’ climbing). Expect high altitude exposure and views.
Tuesday, July 2. Enjoy a hearty breakfast!! Time to gear-up and begin our days trek. This will be a 7.5 mile day along the Appalachian Trail. We have the option of summiting Mt. Madison before leaving in the morning. This section of the AT travels the Madison Gulf and Osgood trails (both rugged) before crossing the Mt. Washington auto road and joining with Old Jackson trail. This will return us to Joe Dodge lodge.
Wednesday, July 3. By now you are really enjoying those carbs. Hut food is good for that. Today we will “Ride the Wildcats” – in total five 4000’ers for our days challenge before depositing ourselves into the lap of Carter Notch hut (3850’ climbing). Once at Carter hut we can drop our packs in our bunk room and slack-pack to Carter Dome ( 1500’ climbing).
Thursday, July 4. Breakfast. Gear-up. Option to summit Carter Dome if we have not done so. This last day we will reverse our route back to Pinkham Notch where our cars await.
Please note: This year’s hut trek will include over 10,000 feet of ascending. You must be comfortable with pulling yourself up and through roots and rocks. Climbing gloves with sticky rubber fingers are suggested. Two of our days will have elevation of 1000’ per mile or more. Our pace while climbing will be approx. ¾ of mile per hour. We will rest more frequently to hydrate and snack.
