Hiking Buttermilk Falls - Delaware Water Gap Recreation Area

Join us for a moderate 8-mile hike plus  climb up Buttermilk Falls - NJ's highest waterfall which are 200' high. We will start with a steep, rocky climb past the falls to reach the Appalachian Trail [total elevation 1,000+]. Once on the AT, we will cover easier terrain taking wood roads around Crater Lake as well as Hemlock Pond. After our steep downhill and if conditions are favorable, we will consider any interest in stopping at Tillman's Ravine for an easy short one-mile trek through its beautiful evergreen forest rich with fern and cascades. Meet at Buttermilk Falls parking lot at 9:30am SHARP. As a precaution, WEAR ORANGE. Bring sturdy footwear, lunch/snacks and water; sorry no dogs allowed. This is an all-day activity.  Heavy rain cancels. Optional post-hike refreshment stop.

Please note:  Mountain Road may still have several rough road surface areas; if possible travel in a vehicle with high clearance.

Thank you all for joining me for what became quite an adventure for my group. A huge thank you to Sue B for leading a 2nd hike. Who would have thought the slower/shorter hike would have trekked more miles than the faster/longer hike? One wrong turn on a woods road is all it took. Thanks to my group for their patience, understanding and positive attitude. The after-hike was great as always.

Terry, What a great day to be out in the woods! The added miles made our outing longer, which was enjoyable. Thanks again!

I had never hiked in this area of Delaware Water Gap before and it was absolutely stunning! Waterfalls, lakes, woods, beautiful autumn colors, and spectacular weather. Had a wonderful time with the group, many great conversations, I feel like I have new friends. Thanks so much Terry, it was a pleasure meeting you and I hope to hike with you many more times in the future!

Anne - I meant to ask you - how was the trek down the falls? I bet you did fine. Looking forward to future adventures.

Hi Terry, I pulled out my poles and took it slow. The poles really made a huge difference, that's why I carry them. I even used them on the steps down, because by that time my legs were like jelly! So, as everybody was saying, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was a great day! My legs are sore today (but in a good way, meaning I got a good workout!). Yes, looking forward to future adventures!

Thanks, Terry for a wonderful hike. It was good to do some additional
exploring of the beautiful area, on such a pleasant autumn day.

Looking for a carpool from the Quakertown TP exit for Dwayne - who can accommodate? Thanks!

    October 22, 2013

    • Terry B

Tom - the last time I was up that way there were some big pot holes but was able to get around them; I had a high clearance vehicle. That was before Sandy and I would imagine they had to totally re-grade the roads since they were washed out. I would suggest consolidating as much as possible. I will be taking 3 in my car and we found a place to drop a couple cars on the way. Sue B frequents that area - any comments on road conditions?

Thanks, Sue, but those are the same as the 'birders' referenced link on AMC site, so I'll give it a whirl

Anyone interested in carpooling from the Quakertown TP commuter lot?

    October 22, 2013

    • Wendy

We could easily pick you up in Quakertown at the TP commuter lot. Let me know if that works for you. We would be there around 7:45.

Dwayne, Please email me your cell phone number if you are still interested in a ride from Quakertown TP Park n Ride. Be there at 7:45 sharp. Thanks!

The road from Old Mine Rd. to Buttermilk Falls has pot holes. A low clearance vehicle with passengers will have a difficult time. Drive another 3/4 mile on Old Mine Rd. northbound and turn right at Walpack Center, cross bridge and turn right onto Mountain Rd. Travel on Mountain Rd. for about 2 miles until you reach the Buttermilk Falls parking lot on your right. Those coming in from the north on Rt. 206 can take Struble to Dimon Rds. to Tillman Ravine and then turn left onto Mountain Rd. I talked with Stokes S.F. office and all Stokes roads are open and in good repair. The bridge at Walpack Center was closed earlier in the year, but the lady at Stokes said she's pretty sure it's open now. Crossing the Walpack Center Bridge is your best bet for low clearance vehicles.

Anyone interested in carpooling from Monmouth County?

    October 25, 2013

  • Anne

Looks like I'm coming in the opposite direction from the written directions we received. I think off of 80E I just stay on Old Mine Road to National Park Service 615 to Mountain Road. If anyone is familiar, let me know if I'm on the right track. If not, the Google map directions look pretty clear.

Is anyone coming from the Lehigh Valley? I was planning on taking 22E, 33N, 209N, 80E. Admittedly, from there I have a little trouble with directions! Looking for a ride share if it's on anybody's route.

In case everyone hadn't heard, the current round of government shut-down will reach it's conclusion tomorrow so we're back in business.

Hi All. Terry wants to divide the group so I have volunteered to lead the faster group with a little more mileage. We'll meet at Buttermilk parking lot, but shuttle up to Walpack Cemetery and start from there.

Sue B - you beat me to the punch! Yes, Sue will take approximately 12 participants and have her own sign-in sheet. I will lead a more relaxed pace with lots of photo stops. We can all gather for the optional after-hike refreshment stop which will be in NJ. Last time a small group stopped somewhere on the PA side. An update will follow early next week.

Here's to hoping that the government shutdown ends soon.

I am not sure if Buttermilk Falls in in the DWGNRA but if it is the park is officially closed and the access road to the falls may be barricaded. If the government shutdown is still in effect you may want to check the status.

I would Wendy but I'm heading up Friday afternoon with a couple in from LA. If anyone is interested, staying over Friday/Saturday night I can see if I can get a bigger cabin. Let me know here. Rate is $31 per person/ per night if you're an AMC member. (presuming Fed Gov is open for business :)

I read that with the government shutdown the Mohican Center is also shut down.

    October 2, 2013

    • Terry B

Yes Doug - currently Mohican Center is closed. If the shutdown continues, I am not certain I will be able to lead this hike - fingers crossed for a quick lifting of the shutdown.

      October 2, 2013

    • Denis M.

Yes, it's closed. I reserved anyway for 25th and 26th. I have filled the cabin (3) but if a spot should open up I will post here if anyone wants to pile in. All up to Congress now....

Hi, Is anyone travelling from South Jersey? I am close to 295 in South Jersey and would like to carpool with someone. Will help with gas.
