Experience the unique open terrain of Lehigh Gap with panoramic vistas of the surrounding valley. On this 8 mile hike, we will experience open rocks, grasslands, and a very scenic landscape that has been poisoned by years of zinc smelting. Our scenic loop hike starts with the challenging climb up the eastern side of Lehigh Gap. This 1000 foot climb includes some rock scrambling that may take us off the AT for a short distance. We will then follow the old decommissioned alignment of the AT on the ridge of the mountain and return the new AT. The new AT alignment is on the side of the mountain and presents a roller coaster experience with up and and downs. We will descend the mountain on the winter trail at Lehigh Gap. There will be an optional post hike gathering.
We will meet at the Appalachian Trail parking lot on the east side of the gap. You should be in good physical shape to do this hike. You should also be an experienced hiker. You will be asked a few questions when you RSVP yes for this hike.
Over the ankle hiking boots are highly recommended. Wet conditions may alter our route. The group size is limited. Rain cancels. AMC rating is 3C/D8. The trails will be very rocky.
