Hiking and Exploring the Ramapo Valley County Reservation

Join us for a moderate 8+ mile trek through the popular Ramapo Mountains located in Bergen and Passaic Counties. This rocky footpath has many ups and downs with some stream crossings and presents delightful views of Ramapo Lake, the surrounding countryside, Wanaque Reservoir, lily-covered Todd Lake and the quite impressive ruins of Van Slyke Castle. Keep your eyes peeled for old millstones lying on the ground.

Meet at the Skyline Drive lower parking lot at 9:00 am SHARP [GPS: N[masked]-W 074.25196]. Bring sturdy footwear, lunch/snacks and water; no dogs allowed. As a precaution, WEAR ORANGE.  Heavy rain cancels. This is an all-day activity. Refer to NY-NJ Trail Conference Map #115.

PARKING:

Rt 287 to Exit 57, north on Skyline Drive briefly – the “lower” parking lot is on the left, there is a large wooden sign but it comes up kind of suddenly. The entrance is pretty rutted, so take it easy if you have a low-clearance vehicle. This popular trail head lot fills up quickly.  PLEASE CARPOOL.

Thank you all for a great day outdoors; the weather gods really did look down upon us -- couldn't ask for a better day. We were able to stop and explore and even talk to boy scouts as they participated in their Pioneer weekend. The after-hike was lots of fun as always. Looking forward to many more adventures.

Thanks Trry for organizing and thanks to all for a great hike. Lots of hills and valleys. I hope someone will be able to calculate actual mileage....I vote for 11-12 miles :-)

Anyone want to carpool from south Jersey?

    November 13, 2013

    • Jeff L.

Sheila, I hit enter before I wanted to! More on directions to library: Follow Route I-295 North. Exit at Route 1 South. After I-295 overpass there will be a traffic light at Franklin Corner Road. Stay to the right onto Business Route 1. Make right turn at next traffic light, onto Darrah Lane. Library is on the right. I have a black Toyota RAV4 SUV. See you then!

I would love to carpool from the Flemington/Bridgewater area if someone is interested. I must, however, get home after the hike due to other commitments.
