Because of the rain that is expected on Saturday, this hike is now canceled. Email notice is being sent to the participants. I'll try to reschedule for late April or early May.
The Batona Trail is a 50 mile linear trial that crosses the vast wilderness of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. This hike will cover the middle 12.4 mile section of the trail from Carranza Memorial to Batsto Village The trail has little elevation change and is mostly sandy paths and some old sand roads. The trail is well blazed with pink blazes. For those who bring a camera we will take our time to identify where the photographic opportunities exist. Bring any type of camera. The trail crosses many streams, bogs and wet areas as it parallels the Batsto River for most of the hike.
We will be meeting at Batsto Village in Wharton State Forest. We will organize a car shuttle to take us the hike starting point at Carranza Memorial. We will hike the south to where we met. At the end of the hike, we will take the shuttle drivers back to their cars. I expect this to be an all day hike that will last until the 4-5 PM time frame. There will be no stores or places to pick up anything as the trail transverses mostly unbroken forest.
Please bring at least 1 quart of water. More is better, especially if it’s a warm day. Also bring a lunch and snacks. We will take an extended break for lunch by noontime or shortly after. If the hike is to be postponed due to inclement weather, notice will be given by 9 PM the night before the hike. Check this Meetup page for the latest.
The map for this hike is the Batona Trail map given out for free at the state park offices where the trail passes. This includes Wharton, Brendan Byrne, and Bass River State Forest.
There will be an optional post hike dinner at the Pick-A-Lilli Inn.
Hike Rating 3B13 (faster pace, soft ground/trails with little elevation change, 13 miles)
