I started this group to assemble backpackers for the purpose of finding great folks to section-hike the Appalachian Trail with. Beyond my personal desire to hike the AT, this group is dedicated to everyone who is looking to section hike any part of the trail from Georgia to Maine (this started out as an NYC/NJ/CT group, but we are expanding this group to a National level). If you are an experienced backpacker, join the group and send me a message to become an organizer and attract folks to join you in your own adventures. Whether your trips last for a month or even just a weekend, this is the place to find others with the desire (but perhaps not the time) to hike the AT in its entirety in single trip.
If you are thinking of joining us you will have the following:
multi-day backpacking experience
You will have your own gear (a backpack, a tent & a sleeping bag)
knowledge and skills to set up camp and prepare your own food in the back country
Understanding of basic orienteering and first aid
21 years of age or older
A healthy appreciation for and respect for the outdoors
$1 a year to chip-in for the cost of running this meetup group
My vision for this group is that we would use the meetup as a forum to meet other backpackers in the area who would also like to section-hike the AT. Depending upon your speed, experience and skill level we will ultimately break down into smaller groups and plan multi-day excursions on the AT. If you have section hiked the AT in the past or even better if you have thru-hiked the trail we would be most pleased to have you in our group. Intermediate level backpackers especially are quite welcome (I'm intermediate level myself) - advanced beginners with a willingness to learn are also welcome to join us.
If you are brand new to hiking and backpacking, this group is probably not going to be a fit for you.
About me: My trips will be organized in the Spring and Fall. My trips will be limited to 5 backpackers or less to preserve the wilderness experience for everyone. In 2012, over 20 days and 5 trips I've hiked about 250 miles of New York/New Jersey/Connecticut sections of trail. From here I've decided to continue northwards the 700 miles that I need until I reach Mount Katahdin. I'll be starting out in Salisbury, Connecticut in March or April, 2013 and aiming for Crawford, New Hampshire (I will make it to Wallingford, Vermont by the end of Spring). I hope that some of you will be able to join me on all or part of this adventure!
