THIS IS OUR MOST POPULAR MEETUP OF THE YEAR - AND WE DO THIS ONE EVERY YEAR !

Hike along the Byron Herbert Reece Trail and climb atop Blood Mountain - an iconic peak along the Appalachian Trail! This is a MODERATE RATED hike that totals 4.4 miles in length. The views from atop the mountain are stunning - especially at this time of year - which should be just about peak time for fall foliage!

Follow renowned guide/naturalist/storyteller Bob Gabrielsen and Appalachian Wilderness Guides staff on a trek up the mountain as we spin yarns of the the ghosts and magical Cherokee spirits (said to still live up on the mountain) as you enjoy the scenery on this weekend before Halloween!

After the hike - we'll sit around a campfire near the trail head, sip some hot, fresh mountain cider and socialize!

We'll "Meetup" at the Byron Herbert Reece Parking Lot for Blood Mountain off Gainseville Highway in North Georgia.NOTE: GOOGLE MAPS / MAPQUEST AND GPS'S CANNOT FIND THIS PARKING LOT - AND DO NOT CONFUSE THIS FOR THE BYRON HERBERT REECE NATURE TRAIL AT NEARBY VOGEL STATE PARK.

1) INPUT THESE COORDINATES IN YOUR GPS [masked] / [masked])

and /or

3) FOLLOW THIS GOOGLE MAPS LINK http://goo.gl/maps/IaawW TO THE "MOUNTAIN CROSSINGS" HIKER STORE - travelling north from Atlanta - you then turn onto the second road downhill from there into the trailhead parking lot.

Bring trail snacks, a cold lunch, water, a camera, comfortable clothing appropriate for weather 10 degrees cooler than the Atlanta forecast, a rain poncho, comfortable footwear and a small bookbag or daypack to carry it on the trail.  Feel free to contact us at [masked] at any time!

Thanks for welcoming a newcomer. Awesome hike with new circle of friends.

Bring a warmer coat for the after-hike cider event. You don't need to haul it up to the top of Blood Mountain and back. Just leave it in your car. But you'll probably want something warmer just in case the temperature drops.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT SATURDAY'S HIKE (10AM) THE TEMP THERE WILL BE 36 DEGREES. ON TOP OF BLOOD MT. FOR LUNCH (12:30) WILL BE 49 DEGREES. TEMP AT FINISH AT TRAILHEAD WILL BE 55 DEGREES. Mostly sunny with no chance of rain. Dress in layers. Think about bringing/wearing an outer wind-resistant jacket. Hat and gloves if you want.

Is anyone coming from Blairsville that wants to carpool?

      October 25, 2013

  • Samantha S

Parking is at a premium there. My husband and I are driving from Gainesville leaving around 8 am if anyone would like to carpool.

    October 25, 2013

  • Bob G.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be prompt - and showing up early is a GOOD idea. (folks come the night before from other states to park here at this time of year - so parking can be rough. Do not invent your own parking space. We do not refund for folks who could not park). This hike leaves at 10:15 sharp - BUT - if you start hiking early (ahead of us) - WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO EXCLUDE YOU FROM THIS ACTIVITY. We have folks fill out release forms and nobody gets in front of the group's lead and nobody gets behind the tail person and we do not stop the hike to fill out paperwork. There is a fire and cider & treat following the hike at the trailhead - so don't rush off at the end of the day ! Thank you !

I would like to bring my dog if that is ok and it is warm enough for her to be out all day ( she is not really a cold weather dog)

    March 9, 2013

    • Samantha S

I agree. I think that it is going to be too cold for her this weekend. She is going to be mad at us when we leave the house in our hiking gear without her.

      October 24, 2013

    • Bob G.

Probably a good call - bring her back a treat :)

Please forgive me Bob if I've asked this question already. Is the hike 4.4 miles up to Blood Mountain for a total of 8.8 or is it 2.2 miles up and then turning around for 4.4 miles total?

    October 13, 2013

    • Bob G.

      4.4 total

      October 24, 2013

  • larry g.

Dan you can call me at[masked]

    October 23, 2013

  • Bob G.

This trip is 4 miles total - 2.2 up the mountain + 2.2 back :)

    October 13, 2013

  • Bob G.

This hike is being split into 2 GROUPS - so do not shy away because you do not want to be on a 25 person hike. The group you are hiking in can only be as large as 13 max. No more spots will be opened up.

How and where do I pay the $20? Is there camping nearby?

    October 2, 2013

    • Bob G.

Click to RSVP and the rest is self explanatory. Look to see if you can camp at Vogel State Park.
