June meeting - The Help

  • Jun 1, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

For our first meetup, I have chosen the book The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. I chose this book because the story is a good one and food is featured often - enough to give everyone inspiration for some delicious dishes. Here is what the book release says about The Help: "Aibileen is a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who's always taken orders quietly, but lately she's unable to hold her bitterness back. Her friend Minny has never held her tongue but now must somehow keep secrets about her employer that leave her speechless. White socialite Skeeter just graduated college. She's full of ambition, but without a husband, she's considered a failure. Together, these seemingly different women join together to write a tell-all book about work as a black maid in the South, that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town..."

This meetup will be limited to 12 participants. IMPORTANT: when you RSVP, please keep in mind that two weeks before the meetup date I will ask that you please tell the group what type of dish you are bringing (main course, dessert, beverage, like that) so that we don't end up with 10 chocolate pies. Your dish should serve about 10, be homemade (the point of this is not to grab a veggie platter at King Soops on the way in, but to be creative with your cooking), and have been inspired by the book. It does not have to be a dish that was featured in the book. Feel free to get your inspiration from the region, an ingredient, or anything else that the book awakened in you. If you would also like to bring wine or other beverages, please feel free to do so.

We will meet at my house for this first meetup. I will provide dishes, utensils, napkins, beverages, and also make something that the book inspired. It's a party!

If you have allergies or other food preferences/requirements, please note them in your RSVP comments.

I look forward to meeting you! Diane

PS: Audiobooks are a great way to "read", so please feel free to do so!  And if you are interested in the meeting, please join the waiting list.  Things change, you never know!

I think I'd better bow out. My dog is having surgery up at CSU this week and will probably just be coming home on Sat so I'll need to keep an eye on him.

    Hi all,

It's that time! Two weeks till our meeting to discuss the book and sample the wonderful dishes we make that were inspired by the book. Please click on "Change Your RSVP" and in the comments let everyone know what dish you will be bringing so that we do not duplicate too much. The first people to post a dish get "dibs" on that dish. Please be fairly specific. For example, say, "caramel cake", not "dessert". For those who want to, you may bring as many dishes as you like - you are not limited to one.

If by next Saturday you have not posted a dish, I'll send you one reminder. You will get till the next Monday to post, then you will be taken off the RSVP list and a member on the waiting list will move up into the attending list. That will give them six days to choose a dish. I know this might sound strict, but I really want to make this a good experience for those who are dedicated to making this event a success. Thank you everyone!

Note to everyone, this event is going to be held at my home, and I have cats. Although I will vacuum thoroughly before you arrive, if you are severely allergic, you might want to premedicate or reconsider. I hope everyone can tolerate it, though. The cats will be kept in a separate room during our meeting.

To those on the waiting list, hang in there! People frequently back out of events, so I am certain that there will be spots opening up.
