For our first meetup, I have chosen the book The Help, by Kathryn Stockett. I chose this book because the story is a good one and food is featured often - enough to give everyone inspiration for some delicious dishes. Here is what the book release says about The Help: "Aibileen is a black maid in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, who's always taken orders quietly, but lately she's unable to hold her bitterness back. Her friend Minny has never held her tongue but now must somehow keep secrets about her employer that leave her speechless. White socialite Skeeter just graduated college. She's full of ambition, but without a husband, she's considered a failure. Together, these seemingly different women join together to write a tell-all book about work as a black maid in the South, that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town..."
This meetup will be limited to 12 participants. IMPORTANT: when you RSVP, please keep in mind that two weeks before the meetup date I will ask that you please tell the group what type of dish you are bringing (main course, dessert, beverage, like that) so that we don't end up with 10 chocolate pies. Your dish should serve about 10, be homemade (the point of this is not to grab a veggie platter at King Soops on the way in, but to be creative with your cooking), and have been inspired by the book. It does not have to be a dish that was featured in the book. Feel free to get your inspiration from the region, an ingredient, or anything else that the book awakened in you. If you would also like to bring wine or other beverages, please feel free to do so.
We will meet at my house for this first meetup. I will provide dishes, utensils, napkins, beverages, and also make something that the book inspired. It's a party!
If you have allergies or other food preferences/requirements, please note them in your RSVP comments.
I look forward to meeting you! Diane
PS: Audiobooks are a great way to "read", so please feel free to do so! And if you are interested in the meeting, please join the waiting list. Things change, you never know!
