This group is about the traditional martial arts of Bagua Zhang and Cha Chuan. We meet and train in the freshness of the outdoors (but its free) so come prepared. This meet up provides an opportunity for anyone to learn about the ideas and techniques behind these awesome styles of Kung Fu. We explore them through active participation and through conversation. What is this type of Kungfu all about?
Based solely on my own Kungfu quest and the experiences I've had over the years, I have to say ( and you've probably heard it many times from others as well ) that Bagua, Cha Chuan, and Kungfu in general are about more than simple combat.
As I see it, the first real purpose of Kungfu is to connect with the fundamental sources of life, energy, and activity that make you who you are - and then to nurture and cultivate the same to become stronger, healthier, and more well composed as a person.
We also recognize that it is necessary to deal with destructive forces which would diminish us. So methods of defending ourselves against these forces make up the second real purpose of Kungfu - and this is a kind of combat. It’s practise is based on self-defence - but it goes far beyond clubbing each other over the head with clenched fists and the like.
I think it is fair and sufficient to say that these two sides of Kungfu practice completely define what it is about.
True to form, the martial arts of Bagua and Cha Chuan are practices that build up ones sense of composure, perceptual awareness, energy, and physical fitness. They are martial arts that have a host of very real, very effective, methods of dealing with all the combinations of long, mid, and close quarters combat. They include strikes, locks, throws, redirection of forces, and many unusual methods of self-defence. All of this is rooted in the agile and stable footwork (walking methods) of Bagua Zhang, in developing an acute sense of perception, and in maintaining a clear and agile mind. These are the unique "trademarks" of our martial art. There is really nothing else like it.
Our method of training uses postures, sets of physical movements, and partner training as a means of comprehensively developing a persons “KungFu” in an integrated and balanced manor. It has been developed through both study and trial and error over the course of hundreds of years, and has long ago evolved into one of the most effective means of training to be found anywhere.
At our meetups we do some of the ”solo forms”, traditional skill development exercises, and some one-on-one partner work in the form of sparring and drills that we try to base on one's own personal level of development.
Free-form fighting/sparring skills (as opposed to pre-arranged sets of drills) are the core of our partner practice - after all, the reality of self-defence is one of finding composure in a chaotic situation. It is not about remembering how to use something that you have become familiar with in a more comfortable and composed situation.
The meetups are not meant as a replacement for formal/proper classes and therefore may not follow a particular format. It's just a chance to get some practice in and to learn some thing about the martial arts of Baguazhang and Cha Chuan (Zhaquan).

John has almost 40 years of martial arts experience, has trained extensively with "old generation" masters of these arts from throughout China and Tiawan, and is one of Vancouver's most senior experts in the arts of Bagua Zhang and Cha Chuan (Zhaquan.)
