Appsterdam Guru Session: Google App Engine for Beginners

Appsterdam Guru Sessions are informal, very hands-on workshops to share a technology or a technique between App Makers. Explanation from your peers, open discussion and practical experience are key to these sessions.

At this session, Alessandro Bahgat will share an introduction to Google App Engine - an application engine running in the cloud. In this session we'll learn about basic deployment, building a mobile backend, storage, and the exciting experimental features such as Google Cloud Endpoints and the Channel API.

Agenda:

17:00-18:30: Doors open, participants sign in, Pizza arrives about 17:45
18:30-20:00: Overview, Intro exercises, first deployments
20:00-22:30: Challenges! Guided experimentation, hacking...
22:30: Go to a pub for some beer.

This session is meant for developers - the exercises will be in Javascript and Python. If you don't know Python yet, we suggest you review the beginning of this Python tutorial. (don't worry - after the session, you can also use Java, PHP or Go in your GAE projects)

Before the session, please install your favorite text editor, Python 2.7.5, and the latest Google App Engine for Python SDK.

    Hey folks, while we will be able to test our own applications with the local SDK, if you want to deploy to "production" you'll want to take care of these two steps:
    1. make sure you have a Google Account (if you have a @gmail.com address you are all set);
    2. create an app at this page: https://appengine.google.com/start/createapp

    See you tomorrow!

    I'm very looking forward to this! Is a laptop mandatory? Or would it be possible to use a "local" computer?

      Hi Fabio, I think it's still okay to join, we'll just join you up with someone. We can add "practice pair programming" to the agenda too!

    Hi folks, I corrected the date. I accidentally listed it from July 25 to July 26... I know you are all excited but don't think you want to do 30 hours of App Engine. It's now correct, June 25 from 17:00-22:30

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.

Henry, started Reno Motorcycle Riders
