Critiques and Discussion Topic - Outline vs. Winging It

  • Apr 27, 2014 · 2:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

How many people use an outline and how many just “wing it” and type away? Is there a better way or is it all up to the writer? Let's discuss pantsers vs. plotters and what works best for us. If you use an outline, please bring it with us, or take a photo if it's on a wall. We'd love to see it!

Please read the Structure and Critique Guidlines in the Files before attending. Members who RSVP can submit work to be critiqued, about 1,200 words, up to five days prior to the meetup. Please change your RSVP if you can't attend to give others the space. After two no-shows, you will be dropped from the group.

We're in the back room to the right. Remember to patronize our local coffee shop and grab something to drink and/or eat before we start promptly at 2.

There is a $1 fee for each meeting, which pays for snacks and the Meetup.com website. We'll get started promptly at 2, so get here early if you can. Let's get reading and critiquing!

Thanks again to everyone for a wonderful meeting. All critiques were insightful and helpful. So glad to see new faces, and familiar faces as well. See you all next month!

I read Cathy's critique that she mailed to me and realized that I sent the wrong draft to be critiqued. This was a first draft and had so many errors. I've replaced it with a newer draft. If you've already read it, don't bother with the new one. If you haven't read it yet, then you'll have the new one. The idea is the same either way. Thanks and sorry about that. Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow and glad to see critique chatter on here!

I didn't see one for Cathy, except the one from April 4th. Where is there another?

Oh no, it was a personal critique she sent to me. Sorry for the confusion.

Hey all, I'd like to know if I've given enough of an explanation of my own religiosity at age 13. And did I sufficiently clarify my thoughts at the time. Thanks!

Jane, I liked how the narrators religiosity and religious background is subtly coming out in details like....."I recognized it as a copy of DaVinci’s Last Supper."....and....¬."...something from a 19th century Puritan church." ..."mumbling something about how the Blessed Virgin was watching over us." Then the narrator comes through with saying..."I couldn’t quite believe all the stuff that God was expecting of me." Somewhat suddenly showing a deep relationship with God is there. It's evoking my curiosity about the narrators religiosity.

Since Yvette posted , I thought I would as well. I have decided to work on a book of essays, most of them humerous, for my first attempt at publishing. My adoption story is now a side project until I decide if it should be out there or not... I'm calling my new project my "If David Sedaris and Nora Ephron had a baby, it would be me" book. This week's submission is a more serious entry, but I was still hoping to make it humorous as well as deep. Thanks for your input.

Ok, humorous. No bones about it. ;-)

Hey all, I wanted to mention something here about the meeting this Sunday. Just like each of you, my time is really valuable to me and I'm hoping for quality critiques. Please read the note at the top of the page. God Come and Got Him is Chapter 26 in my book.
There will definitely be plot elements that won't make sense to you. Characters will be mentioned with little explanation because the reader is fully familiar with them. I hope I don't sound like a primadonna, but I might just feel a little disappointed on Sunday if I spend the entire time explaining the content from the first 25 chapters. :) Please read for the scene at hand. Is it powerful, even if you don't know who everyone is? Maybe you can imagine that you do. Are there things I can do to make language more effective? How is the imagery? How do you feel about Erlene? Because of word count I didn't go into lengthy explanations. Feel free to email me if you want clarity on any plot points. THANK YOU!

Thanks, Yvette. I think we should all be able to qualify and be sure about what we are looking for with our critiques. It helps everyone while reading.

Yvette, I'm confused about why Blackie would've had something against Booker. Maybe you could add an incident.

Also, please remember to critique each submission. It's important for us all to be there for each other, and do for others as we want them to do for us (no religion intended, just a clear message.) Please come with clear, helpful critiques. If you need help, refer to the guidelines inmthe Files section or contact me with any questions or problems. Sunday should be a beautiful day. See you all there. If you're interested, a good friend of mine is having an art show this weekend featuring 20 artists in her magnificent back yard, which is just a few houses away from me (near Terra Java). It's a marvelous show with brilliant art. I'll be there before the meeting. Check it out if you can at 4926 E. weldon Ave, Phx,[masked]
