"Writing isn’t about making money, getting famous, getting dates, getting laid, or making friends. In the end, it’s about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well."
― Stephen King
This is a group for anyone thinking about writing a memoir, who has started a memoir, or who needs a bit of a push to finish a memoir. Come and share your writing with others who share the same passion for putting our lives on paper, sharing our experiences, and taming the voices that tell us to "write it all down." There is only support and encouragement in this group, as well as helpful critique. We meet twice a month, on the second and fourth Sunday. Each meeting, we'll discuss different books about memoir writing, memoirs that have inspired us, and helpful hints for taking the next step once the memoir is complete. I am a professional non-fiction editor who is now plunging into the memoir-writing arena. Regardless of your background, if you want to share your work, get feedback, and offer helpful critique to others, this is the place to be.
Finally…. Read, Read, Read... read memoirs to get an idea of what is out there. You can't write something you haven't read. Reading published memoirs gives you an idea of how to begin, how to structure, and how to build your own memoir. Quite simply, if you haven't read a memoir, you can't write one and you don't belong in this group.
Stephen King, once again, says it best…
"Can I be blunt on this subject? If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that."
"The more you read, the less apt you are to make a fool of yourself with your pen or word processor."
