I would like to invite everyone to come along on a commercial paddle-rafting trip on the upper Salt River, in the depths of the Salt River Canyon, on Sunday April 11. Cost per person, if you go with my group (they gave me a pretty good discount) is $110.86. The trip starts at the Salt River Canyon Bridge put-in, north of Globe on US 60. (Note: This is NOT tubing, nor is it near the tubing area!!!) Paddle rafts have the guide in the stern, who calls commands and steers. Passengers paddle according to the guide's calls. Check out the website for photos. This part of the river has Class II and III rapids. It is amazingly beautiful: big whitewater with saguaros along the banks!
The company I use is Independent Whitewater/Raft the Salt, which is based in Buena Vista, Colorado. Their "home river" is the Arkansas. They have been running raft trips on the Salt for many years, previously under the name of Blue Sky Whitewater. I have gone with them 3 times and found them to be very fun and very competent. Here is their website for more information: www.raftthesalt.com Phone number is [masked] or [masked]. The people who answer the phone are owner/guides, and can answer any questions you may have.
The advantages of going commercial are that they set up the shuttle, they have the wetsuits and booties and helmets, etc. for everyone, and they give you a nice BBQ and salad bar lunch. All you have to do is to show up with your sunscreen and water bottle! Plus, you have the added safety of being with a professional guide instead of some random friend who has little or no experience. You do not have to have any experience on a guided paddle raft, and yet you get to participate in the paddling.
If you are interested please send me an email. In order to make a reservation you will need to call the company with your Visa or Mastercard (debit or credit) handy. And tell them the date and that you are with my group, under my name. You can go ahead and do that if you want to, without letting me know first, but please do let me know if you have made a reservation!
Camping Sat. night near the put-in was suggested by Lucky and he has also said he will help set up a carpool. I don't live in the Valley but will be coming from the opposite direction. I may also choose to camp if others are interested, but from most areas in AZ it is an easy day trip.
Thanks for your interest. Any questions, comments?
Hi, again, responding to some emails, you will need to call Raft the Salt to pay for this. I am not collecting any money.
TIPPING: I neglected to mention tipping the guide. I give the guide in my raft a $20 bill, and if everyone in the raft does likewise, then the guide has had a good day. I have seen others (whose incomes are 4x to 10x what mine is) give only $5. Of course, it is up to you, it is not mandatory. But I always do request that if you can afford it, bring a $20 bill.
I have 8 people signed up for this so far from several clubs, just call me Elizabeth, Queen of Networking! So that is one raft-full. So now we would like to fill a second raft! If you reserve early, there should be plenty of room!
I now have about 11 people signed up, but there may be several who have made a reservation who have not contacted me via email to verify. I would really like to know, so please let me know if you have actually called the rafting company and paid.
This trip now has 4 rafts going, with 25 people signed up from several hiking groups. I am sort of amazed at the response! Thanks to those from ABC who are participating. There is still room, and there is still time to sign up.
Looks like Scrambler, his friend, and Audra and her son are planning to camp. As I told Scrambler, if you camp by the river, it is expensive, I think $20 a night per person. Pay box is right as you enter the put-in road. Then there are two campgrounds: Jones Water & Timber Camp, between Globe & the river. Then there are all the little roads in the Tonto NF between Globe and the river. Just make sure you are not camping on the rez, unless you have paid the fee!
Those of you who want to camp, may want to email one another!
"I can help coordinate the camping. Free camping on public land preferred."
Does anyone know if you need a high clearance vehicle to get to the meeting site for the raft trip?
No, it is right there by the highway. If you are coming from Globe you will cross the bridge and turn left immediately. There are signs posted that say rafting trips. Then you take the first little dirt road off that dirt road, that goes downhill to some tents and trailers and a parking area. If you pass that little road you will come to some other rafting companies places, so make sure you do turn left at that first little road that goes down to the left. Our company is Raft The Salt.
Just to be clear about this, first you drive 60 to Globe, then take US 60/77 toward Show Low/Springerville. You will drive about 45 min to an hour from Globe. You will pretty much know you are at the bottom of the Salt River Canyon, it is sort of hard to miss.
I drove by yesterday and checked out Jones Water and Timber Lake(?) campsites. Nice with tables, restrooms and grills. Imagine it may be crowded getting in on a Saturady. I also found some primitive sites as backups further up towards the canyon with fire pits.
Let me know where you decide. We may join you after all. Also anyone who has called the rafting co. and made their reservation, please also let me know. There is no way for me to know unless you tell me, or I call them to ask for the roster.
Campers meetup time is 5:30 pm at walmart parking lot (north corner) in Claypool on Rt 60. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&...![]()

Thanks, Scrambler! I think there is a small group (my daughter and friends) planning to pay the big bucks to camp by the river. I am probably going to stick with my original plan to meet with the Show Low group at the K-mart in Show Low at about 8 a.m. on Sunday morning to carpool from there.
Last I checked, there are 32 people total, which fill 4 rafts.
Just call me Elizabeth, Queen of Networking!
I'm sending email to everyone in this group. If you don't receive it, let me know. See you at the river next Sunday! Try to be a bit early, please.
Also, I like to tip the guide, $20 per person, (or less if you can't afford $20.)
Thanks Elizabeth and Scrambler for all the putting together for this trip. We will be there at 5:30 pm at the Walmart for the camping meet up. Audra
Just to be clear, the tip is for the BOATMAN, not for your ABC guide! Although, come to think of it.......I could use the dough!! ;)
Anyway, one does tip one's boatman, it is the way of the world....
Your boatman is just as likely to be a boatwoman, incidentally!
Think he would take a wet check?
Timber camp good choice, Scrambler. Any idea how many campers you'll be having? I think Deborah from Tucson is going to try to join you. Thanks for organizing the campout!
My pleasure!
Think Deb, Audra and me.
I have a blue Ranger with white camper shell. See you at the walmart at 5:30 in Claypool.

Looks like Sharon has signed on with us and is looking to carpool on Sunday?
I'm sorry I cannot be of more help with the carpooling end of things, since I live in the White Mtns.
Please let me know if you need any more info.
Thanks everyone for coming! It was a blast! I tried to meet everyone who came on the trip, but as you know there were 35 of us. I know I didn't say goodbye to everyone in the chaos of leaving. Thanks again for signing up!

It was hard to get this set-up to list the venue correctly. Directions are on the rafting company's website. Most of you have driven from Globe to Show Low on US 60/77 and have gone to the bottom of the Salt River Canyon. Right after you cross the bridge, turn left onto the dirt road with all the river rafting signs posted there. Then you will take the first left, onto the first rutted dirt lane leading to the Salt River Rafting company's tents and trailers--their "river office."
