Bradshaw Mountains Castle Creek Wilderness Loop ~ 17.2 miles

  • Feb 1, 2014 · 7:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

***Update*** Changed to Little Wolf Creek/Pine Creek Loop - Total Distance – 16.3 miles

Route Information/Map - http://hikearizona.com/map.php?MY=5485&M=6

We will get together and then head north towards Mayer.  In Mayer, we’re going to turn onto the 67, and drive the few miles to the corral where we’ll be parking.  We’re going to be stopping in a corral area just west of Mule Canyon, where the Wolf Creek and Little Wolf Creeks intersect.

From the parking area, we are going to start out heading south/southeast until reaching another corral, at the junction of Pine Creek.  After joining up with the Pine Creek trail, we’ll head north until topping out on Big Bug Mesa, where we’ll travel a short distance on a winding network of Jeep roads, until we link up with the Little Wolf Creek Trail #304.  Now we turn south and just stay on the Little Wolf Creek Trail, all the way back to the cars.

I’ll work out a camping spot in the next day or so…but I needed to get this update out so you can all decide if it changes your RSVP.  This looks like it’s going to be a nice trip…we’ll be in much less of an exposed area to, so in many ways, it is a better trip than previously posted.

If anyone hadn’t RSVP’d before, but are interested in going, sign up!  I can get anyone up and running with gear solutions in hours, and we have plenty!  ***No Campfire restrictions currently in place!!! J

Castle Creek Trail #239 & Twin Peaks Trail #240

So here is a little trip of an area I have wanted to get back into for some time now.  The funny thing is, is that it isn’t even that far from the valley (or from Flagstaff for that matter)!  Most of this loop is within the Castle Creek Wilderness boundaries…meaning more remote, less other traffic, and a more natural nature experience.  Whoo-Whoo for nature!  Keep in mind that this, like many areas near the valley, has a limited window of opportunity to visit and explore because it gets so damned hot.

You guys ever drive up and down the 17?  Wait, we’re all in Arizona…so I suspect that we all have!  Anyways, I’m sure you are also familiar with the Sunset Point rest area.  The mountains directly to the west are the Bradshaw Mountains, and then there’s the long canyon in the foreground…Black Canyon.  Well tucked back in there is the small town of Bumblebee, Arizona.  This is where we’re going to start our loop from.

We will meetup Saturday morning and make the short trip up the highway.  We will be turning off out of Bumblebee and start hiking from Castle Creek Cabin.  From here we will follow the trail up into the mountain in a counter-clockwise direction.  We will be hiking the Castle Creek Trail through to its end, and then using a forest road segment to connect up with the Twin Peaks Trail.

Of the distance in the trip, we will be doing the majority of it all on Saturday.  By majority I mean roughly 12 miles so we can make it down to Lower Dead Cow Springs and look for a good campsite, or we may have to continue on through the 13.5 miles which is when we reach a fairly level area of Dead Cow Gulch.  There is and will be water BEFORE the 12 mile mark, so that is nothing to worry about.

Sunday we will have a short hike out and back down to Bumblebee…buzz, buzz!  If everyone is down, we can do a lunch at this place right of the 17 in Black Canyon City…can’t think of the name at all, but they advertise that they have pie!  ***Since the Grand Staircase Escalante trip near Zion, we now have a tradition where we have to have pie…always save room for pie!

Nice, easy, early return back to Phoenix.  Sound good?  Yep, sounds good to me to!  Let’s do it!

Hi Will! What kind of cell phone you have and can take such rich color photos?

    February 5, 2014

    • Will

It's a Motorola RAZR HD. But on top of that it's been lightly edited on my computer to adjust exposure, give depth and color correct.

I'm too lazy for anything like that...but they turned out awesome.

Yep, that's no problem at all...I just asked Will about meeting in Mayer, because he's coming from flagstaff.

      January 31, 2014

  • Corey

Slight chance of rain Saturday night...so don't forget your waterproof layers! :) Temps we are going to be at are stated at the high 30s for Saturday and hovering near freezing Saturday night/Sunday morning...pretty much the same weather we would have encountered on the original route.

    January 30, 2014

    • Will

Snow above 6000 it's starting with flurries here.

Should be gorgeous up in the area. Can't forget my gold-pan...it is the Bradshaws after all!

      January 31, 2014

  • Corey

I've been looking more deeply at this trip and it looks like I may have to pull an audible! We will still do a trip...We'd just end up in a slightly different area (same vicinity though), and have an equal to shorter hike length, but I'm not 100% just yet. I'm trying to avoid an unpleasant cat claw experience...I'll keep everyone updated!

    January 28, 2014

    • Corey

I'll check for any fire restrictions Friday to make sure, but as of now, yes we can have campfire.

    1 · January 27, 2014

    • Corey

I'm pretty certain I've got us in the pine forest Saturday night, so I imagine hammocks would be ok. I'll look into it more tomorrow.

      1 · January 27, 2014

    • Corey

Fan, you'll be able to hang your hammock with no problem.

I will meet you all Saturday morning in my Jeep at the turnoff for FR 684/Castle Creek Rd. The road continues on dirt for 4.7 miles to the trailhead from there. The road appears to cross the creekbed several times, although it is hard to gauge the roughness of the road with satellite imagery. If anybody has any difficulty or doesn't feel comfortable driving the road at any point, I would be happy to ferry them from their car to the trailhead and back.

    January 27, 2014

    • Corey

Thanks for looking into this Will! And that sounds good, we'll meet you there... As far as the road goes, we'll see how it looks...if it's a creek creek we have to cross, we'll probably use the jeep ferry!

      January 27, 2014

    • Will

I had a good, close look at the satellite on Google maps of the road. Looks like 4wd high clearance only from what I saw and from what I heard about online in trail descriptions.
