Grandview of the Grand Canyon -SouthRim- Grandview Trail/Horseshoe Mesa

Just scored some permits for the first weekend in May to hike the Grandview to Horseshoe Mesa in the Grand Canyon.  Once we get to the park on friday night, we will camp at the Mather campground on the south rim. Saturday we will break camp and drive down the rim road just a bit and park in a small area that provides access to the Grandview trailhead.  From there we'll begin our hike (starting from the Grandview Trailhead) and head to our camp on Horseshoe Mesa.  We drew a short straw, so we do have to camp in our designated site on the mesa (site D if you're wondering)...this is a great campsite, but it really isn't that far in (i'll update with distances at a later date)...it may only take us an hour or two to hike in Saturday.  Worry not because this is still going to be awesome...after we set camp, we can make a day-trek to the Hance Rapids on the Colorado and get to play near the water in the afternoon.  I'm actually pretty stoked the way it turned out because making the trip to the river and back will be much less arduous without carrying a pack full of gear!  Not to mention we will have a nice and short (though not easy with elevation gain) trek out from the mesa and back to our cars on Sunday.  Let's do it!

Cost per person is $23.17...  This will include all of your camping fees for Friday at Mather campground, your permit costs for Saturday below the rim, and a portion of the national park entrance fees...

What a great, less-traveled area of the canyon...definitely tough, but it was awesome! Well, except for that vertical drop I almost couldn't get back up when following Hance Creek and 'trying' to get to the river. Loved it!

We're all packed and need to leave straight from work tomorrow afternoon. How/where can we find you at Mather Campground? If that's not possible, can you email a pdf of the camping permit for site D on Horseshoe Mesa?

Poochie. Can you give my paid spot to Lori or someone else that needs it so they don't have to pay and they can go?

I know this trip is full, but for my education, how far is this hiking distance? I'm trying to determine the best trips for a brand new beginner. Thx!

Where are you meeting Friday night? It will be a stretch to make it from Tucson after work; we may need to know how to find you at Mather Campground We don't need entrance permits for the park (Golden Geezer Pass).

I'll have everything posted tomorrow night with where we'll be meeting and such.

If anyone is interested in my 2 spots for this trip, I will gladly let you take them off my hands for the designated amount (46.34). As luck would have it I was drawn for GC permits exactly 3 days after we return from this trip, and that is just not going to work out for me. Please pm me if you're interested and we'll see what we can work out. Thanks!

Bring me back 12.43 pounds of cocoa leaves. You know...for the altitude sickness on future trips. Ha!

But be careful in Mexico if going through there....I think Lucy had her pack hit on at the airport last year.
