We will spend the weekend at Woods Canyon Lake, kayaking, camping, hiking, fishing, laughing.
The lake:52 acres surrounded by Ponderosa pine, Douglass fir and oak. Bald eagles nest here and can be seen snatching fish out of the lake. Bathrooms and water available as well as a small well stocked store at the lake. This is a small and very popular lake. Only electric motors can be used to power boats, leaving no wakes.
There is lots of free camping nearby in the forest. No water - bring your own, No bathrooms except at the lake and over by the Visitors Center- you gotta do what you gotta do. Be responsible campers. One of my favorite places is behind the Rim Visitor Information Center. Free- and you are right alongside the Rim, Beautiful.
If you just want to come for the day you are of course welcome.
Our camping group will be going up on Fri morning Turnoff is between Mile Marker 282 and 283 .
We will take the 87 Beeline Highway to Payson 60 miles, right on 260 East 29.3 miles, at which point 260 has reached the top of the Rim. Here is Rim Road to the left, Old Rim Road to the right. If you are directly heading to the lake, take Rim Road to the left 3.3 miles, then turn right to stay on Rim Road for .3 miles, then it turns into Forest Service Road 105, and another .9 miles you have reached the lake.
*********To get the the camp ground, take a right on Old Rim Road away from the lake when 260 has reached the top of the rim. When you will see the Rim Visitor Information Center on the right you are in the right place. Drive through the Visitor Center Parking Lot and it will turn into FR171/Old Rim Rd. Take FR171 past the picnic area (says no camping keep going) to the dispersed campsites. We will be camped on the right where you see the Arizona Outdoors Activities Group Sign. Preferably Sites 12 AND 13. LOOK FOR GROUP SIGN
To see a map of the area, type in "260 Payson and Old Rim Road" in http://maps.google.co...
Kayaking- lets set up camp and meet at the lake to paddle. For those camping Friday night, we will meet at the Marina around 9 A.M. If you are going up Saturday, folks will meet at the Marina at 1:00- 1:30 and get in the water. If you miss us at the marina- the lake is small you will find us. Paddle till about 5:00, and plan dinner. Sunday, breakfast, paddle and or hike- the rim trail is awesome with great photo opportunities.
We will be organizing food for potlucks in a later posting.
