I retired as a Coast Guard Captain after 30 yrs and consulted for 5 yrs for DHS agencies: counter-terrorism, piracy, emergency preparedness & response. During my CG career, I was an ocean engineer, ship-driver, commanding officer (CO) of a civil engineering unit, CO of the Research & Development Ctr, led the CG's Quality Program, chaired the Commandant's Innovation Council, and was the 1st CG/DHS Fellow at the Homeland Security Institute. Education: BS in Ocean Engineering-CG Academy, MS & Professional Ocean Engineer degrees from MIT, DBA (MBA on steroids) earned in 2011 allowed me to change careers to teach leadership and write. I'm a past National Board of Directors member of the Society of American Military Engineers and a professional engineer. I'm an Excellence in Government Sr Fellow and served for over 10 yrs on their Board of Leaders. I have also co-coached 25 EIG Fellows (GS15/14s) from 15 federal agencies. I was a founding Board member of MIT's Military Alumni Assn.
I noted Jonathon was a marine historian - ask me about the Revenue Cutter BEAR which saved native Alaskans in the late 1800's from disease & starvation. My proj: While an EIG Fellow, I wrote a paper on Guidelines for "Leading from the Middle" which was well received & I was asked to lead 3 workshops. The workshops were well attended & participants very engaged. Friends said I should write a book, but I didn't have time due to my CG career. While CO of the R&D Center & Chair of the Innovation Council I saw incredible work done by people at all levels who were proactive & took initiative. My dissertation was "Improving Organizational Performance through Innovation & Empowering the Workforce". I wrote an article for "The Public Manager" (Fall 2011) based on my research "So Satisfying - Leading from the Middle in the Coast Guard"-which was their 4th most popular article in recent yrs. I'm now writing a book to provide strategies, tools & job aids for those who would lead from the middle
Hi, I'm Geoff Abbott and would love to join Tues' meeting, but don't want to intrude if it's full. I teach leadership courses at SEC's College of Leadership Development and am a retired Coast Guard Officer. I'm writing on leading 'from the middle'.
I enjoyed meeting everyone and hearing their stories and what they are working on. A very interesting, educational and enjoyable evening. Geoff
