Here are a couple of books on memoir writing that I like:

Adair Lara Naked Drunk and Writing: Shed Your Inhibitions and Craft a Compelling Memoir or Personal Essay (I actually don't like the title, but the book itself is really helpful.)

Natalie Goldberg Old Friend from Far Away: The Practice of Writing Memoir

Great thanks to Kathryn Temple for these suggestions!

The Situation and the Story: The Art of Personal Narrative by Vivian Gornick is also very good. It makes a good distinction between the context or circumstances, what actually happens (the situation) and the emotional insight or wisdom that the writer gains from the experience (the story).
