When I was living in Nanjing I met some Chinese friends who invited me to Gulou Guangchang (Drum Tower Square) for English Language Corner. There chinese people of all skill levels met to practice English with other Chinese or any native English speakers who showed up. After returning to the US in July 2010 I decided to start something similar for Chinese language learners to continue to learn and practice Chinese. I quickly realized that most Chinese natives would not be interested in coming if the primary purpose is just studying chinese language. So I made the purpose broad enough in hopes that native Chinese would also attend to help us speak chinese. The dream is for The Arlington Chinese Corner Meetup Group to meet monthly in the Wilson Blvd area in Arlington at the many restaurants, cafes, and other venues available near the Ballston, Clarendon, Courthouse, and Rosslyn metro stations.
We will organize social, educational, and other shared activities. The group is open to both native and non-native speakers to meet people interested in China, US-China relations, Chinese Culture, history, contemporary social issues and Chinese language. The plan is to meet once a month in Arlington for happy hour, networking, language learning, and movie watching, just about anything will be considered.
If you are a Chinese teacher, tutor, or just interested in meeting in a coffee shop with 4 or 5 chinese language learners to help them focus on speaking chinese please contact the organizers.
